ChatGPT's strength is that it doesn't just find information. It helps you do things with it.
Creative writing and long-form generation. Perplexity can write, technically. But it's optimized for synthesis, not creation. ChatGPT can draft a report, rewrite a paragraph seventeen ways, write in a specific voice, or help you through a creative block. Perplexity can't really do that. It's not what it was built for.

Longer context and complex reasoning. Where Perplexity Falls Short
No image generation. At all. If creating visual content is part of your workflow, Perplexity just isn't an option.
The creative generation ceiling is real. Ask Perplexity to write something ambitious -- a compelling introduction, a persuasive argument, marketing copy with a specific tone -- and you'll feel the limits pretty quickly. It synthesizes. It doesn't really create.
Smaller context window compared to ChatGPT or Claude. Long documents, extended projects, complex multi-part tasks -- Perplexity starts to lose the thread.
Where ChatGPT Falls Short
Knowledge cutoff. Even with browsing mode available, ChatGPT wasn't designed for real-time search. It defaults to its training data, and you have to actively choose to turn on web access. When you forget, you can end up with confidently stated outdated information.
Hallucinations without browsing on. ChatGPT will occasionally generate plausible-sounding facts that aren't real. This is the well-documented limitation of purely generative AI. Perplexity's citation model doesn't eliminate this problem, but it makes errors easier to catch. ChatGPT asks you to trust it; Perplexity asks you to verify it.
No automatic citations. Even when ChatGPT browses the web, the citation quality isn't as clean or consistent as Perplexity's. You often have to ask for sources specifically, and the format varies.
