I want to start by saying what this comparison isn't. It's not a feature matrix where I list every capability of both platforms and let you decide. You can find that anywhere. What I'm trying to answer is: given who you actually are, what you're actually selling, and what you actually care about — which one should you choose?

Squarespace Commerce Basic starts at $23/month when billed annually. Commerce Advanced — which unlocks abandoned cart recovery, advanced shipping, subscriptions — is $49/month. Both are all-inclusive; there aren't transaction fees on those plans beyond payment processor fees.
Shopify Basic starts at $29/month. Shopify (mid-tier) is $79/month. Advanced is $299/month.
That looks like Squarespace wins on price. It doesn't, necessarily. Here's what that $29 Shopify plan doesn't include that most real stores end up needing:

Most Shopify stores I've talked to spend between $50 and $200/month on apps before they've done anything exotic. That's the hidden cost of the app-everything model. Apps give Shopify flexibility that Squarespace can't match — but they also mean your monthly cost is a variable, not a fixed line item.
There's also the transaction fee situation. If you use Shopify Payments (their native processor), no additional fees. If you use any other payment processor — Stripe, PayPal, anything — Shopify charges 0.5% to 2% of each transaction depending on your plan tier. At meaningful volume, that's real money. Squarespace's templates are genuinely beautiful. They're designed by people who care about typography, whitespace, proportion, and visual hierarchy. Squarespace's shipping integration works but doesn't offer the same carrier relationships.
Multichannel selling. Shopify connects to Amazon, eBay, Walmart Marketplace, Instagram Shopping, TikTok Shop — and syncs inventory and orders across all channels from one dashboard. Squarespace's channel integrations exist but are narrower and less mature.
Analytics and reporting on higher Shopify tiers are genuinely powerful — cohort analysis, customer lifetime value calculations, detailed sales reports broken down by product, channel, geography, and time period. Squarespace's analytics are readable and useful for straightforward stores but don't go as deep.
The App Ecosystem: Shopify's Superpower and Its Trap
Shopify's app store has over 8,000 apps. There's an integration for almost anything — loyalty programs, subscription boxes, wholesale pricing, gift cards, upsell flows, route protection, returns management. Whatever your store needs operationally, there's a tool for it.
That's genuinely powerful. It's also how you end up with a monthly Shopify bill that's three times what you budgeted.
My experience talking with small store owners is that the app ecosystem is a blessing and a trap simultaneously. "I'll just add an app for that" is a phrase that tends to end with an expensive monthly stack. The solution is to audit what you actually need before you start, and be deliberate about app additions rather than treating them as a default fix.
Squarespace's extension ecosystem is smaller — hundreds rather than thousands. What's there covers the basics well. But if you need something niche, you might not find it. That's a real limitation for complex stores.
SEO: Closer Than You'd Think
Both platforms generate clean URLs, have meta title and description fields, support alt text, produce sitemaps automatically, and give you sensible canonical tags. Neither is going to cause SEO disasters out of the box.
Shopify's URL structure has one frustrating quirk — product pages live at /products/product-name and you can't change it. For most stores, this doesn't matter. For stores migrating from a different URL structure and worried about preserving link equity, it's an annoyance that requires redirect management.
Squarespace gives you more URL flexibility and has a cleaner blogging interface — which matters if content marketing is part of your growth strategy. If you're writing product guides, tutorials, and category content to drive organic traffic, Squarespace's content tools feel more natural.
Neither platform is a clear SEO winner at the level most store owners operate. Advanced technical SEO requirements (hreflang, complex structured data, custom server-side rendering) eventually run into limitations on both — at that stage, you're usually looking at headless commerce solutions anyway.
Who Should Pick Shopify
You're serious about ecommerce and expect to grow. You need real inventory management — multiple variants, location tracking, bundled products. You want to sell across multiple channels — Amazon, TikTok, in-store — from one system. You're doing meaningful volume (above $5K/month) and need detailed analytics to make data decisions. You want access to the best fulfillment and shipping integrations in the market.
Shopify's complexity and cost are worth it at scale because the platform scales with you. There's no ceiling you'll hit where you need to migrate. From a Shopify Basic store to an enterprise merchant, it's the same platform.
Who Should Pick Squarespace
Your product catalog is under 50 items and isn't going to explode. Visual brand presentation matters a lot — you need the store to look as good as the products. You want an all-in-one price with no app stack to manage. Content marketing is central to your strategy — you want blogs, portfolio pages, and editorial content alongside your store. You don't need advanced inventory management or multichannel integrations.
A jewelry designer selling 35 pieces. A ceramics studio. A small batch food brand. An independent illustrator selling prints alongside a portfolio. These are Squarespace customers — and they're well-served there in a way that Shopify's complexity would actively work against them.

Squarespace for stores where the product catalog is secondary to the brand story — small, curated, visually oriented businesses where the site needs to work as hard as the shop.
The mistake I see people make is picking based on monthly price and then being surprised six months later. Pick based on the store you're building, not the bill you want to pay today. Squarespace is cheaper until you need what Shopify does. Shopify is worth the cost until you're drowning in apps you barely use.
Know your store. Then the choice is usually obvious.
