The Landscape of Women in Tech

The tech industry was first used to be said as male dominated industry, but over a decade it has seen a transition, a no. of female employees has been increased than male employees. Women are more keen to work and are proving themselves in every aspect of the industry. In Spite of this, women are still facing challenges that require everyone’s attention and action.

Challenges Women Face in Tech

1. Gender Bias and Stereotyping

Gender discrimination and orthodox thinking cannot sustain in the tech industry. The thinking that women cannot sustain in technological fields is the biggest challenge in this industry. This partiality can be seen in the way women are treated in job opportunities or salary opportunities. Women frequently have reported that they have to prove their efficiency more than male colleagues to stay in the field.

2. Lack of Representation

Women in the tech industry are sometimes deprived of tech roles, especially roles which are holding many responsibilities. According to a report of AnitaB.org, 2020, women hold only 28.8% of tech jobs. That’s why it makes it difficult for women to find women role models and mentors in the tech industry.

3. Work-Life Balance

Balancing work and balancing personal life in the tech industry requires a high level of dedication and long working hours. Women who are meant to be the wholesale caretaker of the family, sometimes find it difficult to manage both the responsibilities which gives them a high level of stress and burnout.

4. Workplace Culture

The culture in some tech companies is not so good and is a little biased for their male employees. Incidents like harassment, taking decisions in big projects, involvement in career changing projects are generally handled to male employees rather than female employees.

Opportunities for Women in Tech

1. Growing Awareness and Advocacy

There is growing awareness of the need for gender equality in the tech industry. There are many organizations and industries who are looking into this matter and are giving more opportunities to females.

2. Supportive Policies and Practices

Many tech industries are implementing policies to encourage women empowerment in this industry. Policies like flexible working hours, work from home, maternity leaves, promotions and hiring in high tech companies are seen nowadays. Such policies create a healthy and comfortable environment for female employees.

3. Education and Training

It is very important that girls should be educated and should have access to all the necessary training which is required for their growth. In basic school level only, students should be made aware of the technologies trending in the market. Scholarships and online quiz programs also boost the involvement of participation of women in tech.

4. Role Models and Mentorship

The successful growth of women in the tech industry becomes inspiration not only for females but also male employees working in the company. Programs like mentorships, guidance, inspirational also are very helpful to increase women’s interest in the tech industry. This also helps them to know the challenges they face in this industry and hope to overcome these challenges.

5. Entrepreneurial Opportunities

Women are now showing up as tech entrepreneurs in the tech industry. By starting their own companies women are starting their career in tech industry from ground zero and then taking it to the zenith’s height. Now easy working policies and easy government policies also encourage women to be the owner of their own business.

Conclusion
As there are challenges in the industry yet there are ways to grow. By just providing equal opportunities irrespective of gender bias. Every individual can grow according to his/her capacity. The tech industry is at boom and it will remain, when it will provide equal space for women employees too. The future of this industry is bright and people associated with this industry also enjoy the same. Through continuous upgradation and modification and by opening gates for all this techno industry will rule the world.
