I installed Linux Mint on my old MacBook Pro 2013. I had to do some work to get the wifi working, but there are lots of good guides out there. It's very zippy again. This is where I run My OpenClaw (I really don't trust it to run on the Mac mini I use daily, where my actual credentials live).
It was indeed working fine with linux mint (except for the not great video performance). That said, I am still undecided if I will stick with OSX Sierra or if I will go back to Linux Mint.
One thing I thought was to install something like wmakerlive as it's super light and I love the look.
