Electronic Arts has canceled its planned Black Panther game and is closing Cliffhanger Games, the Seattle studio formed to develop the superhero action-adventure title.
Studio closure ends development of the Wakanda adventure
EA said it had decided to stop work on the game and shut down Cliffhanger Games as it refocuses its development plans. The company said it would support affected employees, including by helping them explore other roles within EA where possible. It did not announce a release date for the game, which was still in development.
Cliffhanger was established to make a single-player game centered on the Marvel character. EA introduced the project in 2023 as a third-person action-adventure with an original story set in Wakanda. The game was not presented as an adaptation of a specific film, and EA had not publicly detailed its full plot or shown extensive gameplay.
The studio's closure means the project will not reach players in its announced form. EA has not said whether any parts of the game's concept, technology or development work will be used in other projects.
The decision also ends Cliffhanger's work as a dedicated team. EA said it would focus its creative resources on other opportunities across its portfolio. The company did not disclose how many employees were affected by the closure or how many might be able to move to other positions.
EA shifts resources across its game portfolio
The cancellation is part of a broader effort by EA to reassess its projects and direct resources toward games it considers central to its plans. Such changes can involve stopping a title before it is complete, even after a studio has been created specifically to build it.
EA's original announcement positioned the Black Panther title as a major new project, with a team tasked with building a story around the hero and the fictional African nation of Wakanda. The company's description emphasized a single-player experience and an original narrative. It did not establish a launch timetable.
The cancellation also removes one of the few announced games focused specifically on Black Panther. The character has appeared in Marvel films and other games, but EA's project was intended as its own standalone adventure. With development ended, there is no confirmed replacement project or revised plan for the game.
EA has not indicated that the decision affects its broader relationship with Marvel beyond this title. The company's statement instead described the move as a change in its development focus and said it would work to support the people affected.
For players, the immediate result is that the announced Black Panther adventure is canceled. For the game industry, the move is another example of how publishers can revise portfolios and close studios when priorities change, with consequences for both planned releases and the teams working on them.
