I recommend to start with a reliable source of your data right away, because switching providers is not something you want (I found out the hard way). Though, this does not mean that a reliable Football API has to be very expensive. There are some providers who are asking lots of money for their football data. And some have a very good price/quality level.
The API which worked best for me was the SportMonks API. Next to football, they also have Cricket and Formula 1. For every plan they offer a 14-day Free trial, so it's good to check if the data suits your needs. I think the plans are not expensive and I really like the data quality.
