AI Slop Cost You $97,587 — Here's the Fix

The Most Expensive AI Report Nobody Read

Deloitte Australia spent A$97,587 on a report about AI productivity. They briefed 758 consultants on prompt engineering. The result? The group trained on prompt engineering performed worse than the control group.

Not the same. Worse.

An academic named Nate B Jones was the only person who actually checked the data. Everyone else just cited the headline.

Why This Matters for Your Business

Here's the pattern that's costing you money:

  1. You adopt AI to produce more content faster
  2. AI makes each pass faster — but you do more passes
  3. More output travels at machine speed toward humans
  4. Humans can't process it all, so they skim or ignore
  5. The content you paid to produce has zero impact

The bottleneck isn't production speed. It's human attention. AI didn't remove the bottleneck — it made the pipe bigger on one end and left the other end the same size.

The Real Cost Formula

Every piece of AI-generated content has two costs:

  • Production cost: The time and money to create it
  • Attention cost: The time someone spends reading it

When you generate 10x more content but humans still have 1x attention, 90% of your production cost is wasted.

Deloitte's $97,587 is just a visible example. Your business has its own version — blog posts nobody reads, emails that get archived, reports that get skimmed.

Three Ways to Fix This

1. Measure what gets read, not what gets produced.

Track opens, replies, and actions — not word count. If your AI-generated weekly newsletter has a 3% open rate, it's slop regardless of how well-written it is.

2. Set a quality floor, not a quantity ceiling.

Instead of "produce 5 blog posts per week," try "produce 1 blog post that gets 50 meaningful reads." The constraint forces you to aim for impact.

3. Use AI as an editor, not just a writer.

Before publishing anything AI-generated, ask yourself: "Would I read this if someone else sent it to me?" If the answer is no, don't send it. AI can help you cut, simplify, and tighten — not just produce more.

The Competitive Advantage Nobody Talks About

Most businesses are using AI to produce more. The ones winning are using AI to produce better.

Being worth reading is now the competitive advantage. Not because it's noble — because attention is the scarce resource, and the businesses that respect it get more of it.

Your customers don't care how fast you can generate content. They care whether your content is worth 30 seconds of their attention.

Act accordingly.
