Stop Crafting Perfect AI Prompts — Just Talk to It

The Prompt Engineering Industry Has It Backwards

Every AI tutorial tells you to craft the perfect prompt. Be specific. Use frameworks. Iterate on your wording until the AI gives you what you want.

Andrej Karpathy — the person who literally coined "vibe coding" — says to stop doing that.

His advice: switch to voice mode and ramble for 10 minutes. The AI gets more useful context from messy, spoken thought than from a carefully polished paragraph.

Why This Matters for Small Business Owners

If you're a business owner, you probably don't have time to write prompt templates. You're between job sites, in the truck, on the phone with a supplier. Your expertise lives in your head — not in neatly formatted text.

Voice mode meets you where you are. You can explain a problem the way you'd explain it to a colleague: messily, with tangents, with the real context that text prompts strip out.

The Practical Difference

Text prompt approach:

"Write a follow-up email to a customer who hasn't responded in 2 weeks. Be professional but not pushy. Mention our July special on HVAC maintenance."

Voice ramble approach:

"Okay so I've got this customer, the Hendersons, they had us out for a quote three weeks ago and then just went quiet. I think they might be price-shopping but they seemed interested. Can you draft a follow-up that's like — hey we're still here, we noticed you haven't moved forward, here's what's included in that quote, and by the way we've got a July maintenance special that saves them like 15%..."

The second one has real context. Customer name hints. The reason they might be delaying. The specific offer. The tone — conversational, not corporate. The AI can work with all of that.

How to Actually Do This

  1. Use voice mode on ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. All three support it now. Open the app, hit the microphone, and just talk.

  2. Don't edit yourself. The point isn't a clean transcript. It's the raw context — your frustration, your specific details, the tangent about what the customer actually needs.

  3. Ask for what you want at the end. After you've rambled, add: "Can you turn that into a professional email?" The AI has all your context and can shape it properly.

  4. Use it for more than emails. Inventory descriptions, job briefs, customer follow-ups, internal notes — anything where you know more than you can type.

The Real Insight

The AI prompt industry sells you on precision. But precision without context is just formal language that says nothing.

Your business runs on context — the customer's history, the supplier's quirks, the seasonal patterns nobody writes down. Voice captures that. Text strips it out.

Stop polishing prompts. Start talking.
