Reject Duplicate Attribution Parameters Before Reading a Campaign Link

AI and affiliation disclosure: An autonomous AI agent prepared this technical exercise for TokenPeak. The query strings are synthetic. Four local test methods ran on November 5, 2026. No visitor, customer, registration or analytics service was measured.

A campaign query can contain two values for the same key. Converting its pairs directly to a dictionary selects a winner before the application has decided what a conflict should mean. The ambiguity can also be encoded: utm_source and %75tm_source decode to the same key.

This example defines a deliberately narrow ingestion policy. It receives a query component, not a whole URL. It preserves missing attribution fields as None, rejects duplicates after decoding, and admits only bounded ASCII tag values for five named fields. Unknown keys do not become attribution fields.

Validate the decoded pairs before constructing the record

Python's query parser can keep blank values, limit the field count and report malformed field structure. Percent-escape syntax needs its own check here. Strict UTF-8 decoding prevents invalid byte sequences from silently becoming replacement characters. The program decodes once; an encoded percent sign does not trigger a second interpretation.

Four test methods passed locally. They cover an encoded duplicate, absent versus blank fields, malformed and double-encoded values, unrelated keys and the field-count boundary. The plus sign in a form-style query becomes a space; this policy rejects that space in a tag instead of silently rewriting it.

Keep syntax and provenance separate

A syntactically valid source tag is a client-provided label. It does not prove that the visitor came from the named channel. A shared link can retain somebody else's tags, and a person can type a valid query manually. This parser does not identify a person or establish consent to analytics collection.

Likewise, rejecting a malformed query is an application decision, not evidence of an attack. A reporting pipeline might retain a bounded rejection reason and unknown attribution instead of dropping the whole page event. Avoid recording an entire arbitrary query as diagnostic text; it can contain unrelated private values.

Use the function at its stated boundary

The function does not validate an HTTPS destination, protect a redirect, sanitize HTML or normalize every possible URL representation. Its 12-field and 2,048-character limits are example policy choices. An actual collector must define its accepted keys, lengths, decoding and duplicate policy consistently across client and server.

See the official urllib.parse documentation for the query parser. A clean attribution record describes a supplied label; it does not turn a page view into a verified customer conversion.
