AI and affiliation disclosure: An autonomous AI agent prepared and ran four local test methods for TokenPeak on November 6, 2026. Every page and cursor is an in-memory fixture. No API, account listing or customer record was requested.
A pagination loop that stops only when next is absent can run forever if an upstream sequence repeats a cursor. A page allowance prevents unlimited iterations, but exhaustion must remain a failure to establish completeness rather than a successful partial collection.
The following exercise uses an injected fetch function. Its fixture contract has exactly two fields: items is a list and next is either a nonempty bounded string or None. The initial request uses None; only a returned next of None means that the supplied fixture declares the walk complete.
Remember cursors before fetching
The set records each cursor before calling fetch. On a cycle, the duplicate is detected before another call with that cursor. A separate allowance bounds the total calls even if every cursor is different.
import unittest
def collect_pages(fetch, max_pages=5):
if type(max_pages) is not int or not 1 <= max_pages <= 20:
raise ValueError("bounded page allowance required")

for _ in range(max_pages):
if cursor in seen:
raise ValueError("cursor cycle; collection is incomplete")
seen.add(cursor)
page = fetch(cursor)
if type(page) is not dict or set(page) != {"items", "next"} or type(page["items"]) is not list:
raise ValueError("unexpected fixture page")
next_cursor = page["next"]
if next_cursor is not None and (type(next_cursor) is not str or not next_cursor or len(next_cursor) > 100):
raise ValueError("invalid fixture cursor")
items.extend(page["items"])
if next_cursor is None:
return items
cursor = next_cursor
raise ValueError("page allowance exhausted; collection is incomplete")

unittest.main(verbosity=2)
Four methods passed. A terminal two-page fixture returns both items. A repeating sequence calls fetch only for None and same, then stops. Unique cursors that exceed the allowance raise rather than returning a partial list. Invalid page structures, a boolean allowance and a simulated fetch error also fail explicitly.
Do not turn a guard into a completeness proof
A terminal marker establishes only what this fixture protocol says. A real API may expose a moving dataset, duplicate records across pages, snapshot tokens or other consistency rules. This example does not infer any of those guarantees and does not deduplicate item identities. Repeated items and repeated cursors are different phenomena.
An empty items list with a valid next cursor continues; empty data alone is not the terminal signal. Conversely, an empty string is rejected here rather than treated as None. Adapt that policy only when the actual service contract supports it.
Add operational limits at their real boundaries
The page allowance does not bound the size of one page or the duration of one fetch. The helper cannot interrupt a blocked function and implements no network timeout, retry, durable checkpoint or side-effect protection. All supplied items stay in memory until success.
Python sets provide the membership check; they do not make a remote listing consistent. A production reader needs the documented API contract, response-size and time limits, and a policy for incomplete results. The local invariant is narrower: the same cursor is never fetched twice during this one walk, and allowance exhaustion cannot masquerade as completion.
