What Amazon Built

Amazon's Kent warehouse runs 24 hours a day. Hercules robots move pallets. Conveyor systems pack orders. The facility processes shipments without human intervention on night shifts. It's optimized for one thing: speed. When you're moving millions of units annually, shaving hours off fulfillment time adds up.

What Canadian Importers Actually Deal With

Port of Montreal dock doors open at 06:30 EDT. A container arriving Tuesday morning doesn't clear customs by Wednesday. When CBSA flags for exam, release timeline stretches by 2-5 working days. By the time the broker sends the PARS release, your container is in a hold queue, not sitting in the warehouse waiting for faster robots.

That's the real constraint: customs clearance timing, not warehouse speed.

The Cross-Dock Window

At FENGYE, cross-dock cutoff is 14:00 EDT for next-day outbound. The broker has until morning to file the CAD and get release prior to payment. If CBSA's exam window hasn't closed, the dock door stays empty. Automation doesn't move that cutoff earlier. A robot doesn't make the CBSA file process faster.

This is where importers feel the real cost. Container sits in sufferance warehouse. Dwell climbs. By the time dock-to-stock happens, Q4 inventory windows have shifted. Typical dwell for exam-flagged containers runs 8-12 days when Q4 delays hit.

Why We Stay Manual

Automation pays off when throughput is high enough to cover capital cost. Amazon moves thousands of units per hour. A typical Canadian importer moves 5-50 pallets per day through our dock. The ROI math is different.

But there's a bigger reason we don't automate: compliance flexibility. When CBSA holds a container for exam, dock-to-stock timing shifts. A robot is built for predictable input and output. Manual handling lets us re-time putaway windows, re-sequence pallets for partial release, and adjust racking density on the fly when a broker sends split-release paperwork. Compliance is the constraint, not warehouse speed. Automation doesn't solve that.

What Actually Matters

For Canadian importers, the real wins are upstream. Pre-arrival documentation completeness (PARS quality, HS codes locked, origin verification clean) determines whether CBSA flags for exam. That's not a warehouse problem. That's a broker problem.

Once release comes, the dock window is tight. In-bond cargo handling that processes partial releases, re-palletizes for split shipments, and executes quick putaway is what importers need. Speed matters, but compliance flexibility matters more.

When a container gets exam-held, we don't sit idle waiting for 24-hour automation to solve backlog. We re-route pallets, stage for alternate outbound, call the broker for release timing, and keep the dock door productive on other shipments. That's manual work. That's also what the compliance envelope actually allows.

Cross-Border Versus Domestic

Amazon's Kent facility is domestic. No exams. No pre-arrival reviews. No compliance holds. Scale that automation playbook to Port of Montreal and you hit the CBSA wall within a week.

That's not a knock on Amazon. It's a different business. When your inbound runs 100 TEU per day, your bottleneck is release timing. When it runs 1,000 TEU per day, you can afford to build for speed and absorb the compliance overhead into dock footprint.

Canadian importers who copy Amazon's playbook (racing through the dock in 4 hours) end up with backlog on the outbound side because their freight is still in queue waiting for CBSA. The real constraint doesn't move.

The Actual Edge

Consolidation and de-consolidation services are where importers compress dwell without building robots. If a shipment is exam-held and won't clear tomorrow, we re-sort it to a partial outbound run the next day instead of holding the full pallet for the original destination. That's optimization. It's manual, and it's what a robot can't do in a compliance-held environment.

When CBSA delays hit, importers with dock partners who understand the compliance envelope actually clear faster than those with pure-speed operations. That's an operational edge automation doesn't replicate.

The Kent warehouse is fast. Your import timeline is slow because of CBSA, not because dock doors aren't moving fast enough. Fix the upstream—documentation, broker coordination, pre-arrival quality—and dock speed stops being the problem. At that point, automation starts to matter. Until then, it's capital spent on the wrong constraint.
