Master Open Loop Hooks to Skyrocket Video Retention

Your tech video is dying in the first 30 seconds. Why? Because starting with "Today we're reviewing the new M3 MacBook" gives the viewer's brain zero reason to stick around. They already know what’s coming.

If you want to destroy your retention drop-off, you need to master the Open Loop Hook.

Rooted in basic cognitive psychology, an open loop happens when you plant a tantalizing question, tease a bizarre result, or start a high-stakes mini-story at the very beginning of your video—and deliberately delay the payoff. Human brains naturally crave completion. When you open a loop, you create a psychological itch that can only be scratched by watching further.

Here is how tech creators transform flat intros into open loops:

  • The Flat Intro: "I built a $500 budget gaming PC to see if it can run Cyberpunk 2077."
  • The Open Loop: "This $500 gaming PC actually hits 60FPS in Cyberpunk... until it hit 95 degrees and started smelling like burning plastic. Let me show you the dangerous shortcut that made this happen."

Notice the shift? The second version teases a win (60FPS), a disaster (burning plastic), and a mystery (dangerous shortcut). You’ve opened three distinct loops in under ten seconds. The viewer has to stay to see the resolution.

To apply this to your next tech script:

  1. Find the peak moment: Identify your most shocking benchmark, hidden feature, or absolute worst flaw.
  2. Tease, don't tell: Show a fraction of the result upfront without explaining how or why.
  3. Close the loop later: Deliver the answer deep into the video once retention is locked in.

Stop giving away the ending in your intros. Open the loop, hold the payoff, and watch your average view duration climb.
