Mastering Video Hooks with The Curiosity Loop

Your viewers aren’t leaving your video because your B-roll is weak. They’re leaving because their brains got bored.

If you want to crush viewer drop-off and skyrocket your average view duration, you need to master The Curiosity Loop.

It’s a three-step copywriting framework based on a simple psychological truth: human brains hate incomplete information. Here’s the breakdown:

  1. Open the Loop: Drop a bizarre fact, tease an unexpected result, or pose a burning question.
  2. Delay the Payoff: Build tension with setup, testing, or context without giving away the answer.
  3. Close and Chain: Deliver the answer, but immediately open a new loop before the viewer has time to click away.

Here’s how this looks in a real tech video script:

The Boring Way (Linear):

"Today, we're testing the battery life on the new M3 Max MacBook Pro."

(Boring. Open and closed instantly. Viewers will just skip to the end.)

The Curiosity Loop Way:

"Apple claims this laptop gets 22 hours of battery, but during my stress test, it hit zero in under forty minutes. I thought the unit was defective—until I checked the thermals..."

Notice the difference? You created an information gap. The viewer's brain physically wants to close it, forcing them to keep watching.

The secret sauce is the Chain. As soon as you explain the thermal issue (closing Loop #1), you immediately stack the next one:

"Fixing that thermal bug doubled the battery life, but it revealed an even bigger problem with the new GPU design..." (Opening Loop #2).

Stop giving away your video's conclusions in the intro. Chain your curiosity loops from the hook straight to the end screen, and watch your watch-time charts flatten out.
