Your audience has the attention span of a goldfish on an espresso shot. If you don't grab them in the first five seconds, they’re swiping away.
Enter the Open Loop Hook.
It’s a psychological cheat code for audience retention based on a simple truth: the human brain hates unfinished stories. An open loop drops a compelling mystery or bold statement at the very start of your video, then deliberately delays the payoff. Viewers have to stick around to close the loop.
Most tech creators make the mistake of closing loops immediately.
The Closed Loop (Boring):
"Today we’re reviewing the M3 Mac Studio, and it’s the fastest desktop I’ve ever tested."
(Result: Viewers got the answer. They leave.)
The Open Loop (Magnetic):
"I almost returned this $2,000 Mac Studio on day three because of one fatal flaw. I'll reveal what broke my workflow in a minute, but first, let’s unbox it."
(Result: Viewers are locked in to find out what the flaw is.)
Or if you build software or teach code:
"Most devs waste three hours a day writing boilerplate code. I found a dirty 10-second fix—and no, it’s not ChatGPT. Before I show you the command, let’s look at why your current setup is so slow."
How to execute it in your next tech video:
- Plant the seed: Tease a surprising result, a massive mistake, or a hidden setting immediately.
- Pivot quickly: Transition into the main topic while promising the answer shortly.
- Close the loop: Deliver the resolution later in the video.
Never skip step 3, or you’ll break your audience's trust. Open the loop, build the tension, and watch your Average View Duration skyrocket.
