Your tech review has incredible B-roll, crisp audio, and a flawless setup. But your retention graph still looks like a ski slope. Why? Because you’re giving away the conclusion too soon.
Enter the Logic Gap framework.
Instead of walking viewers linearly from Point A to Point B, you present two true statements that seem to logically contradict each other. This creates an itch in the viewer's brain—a cognitive void—that they can only scratch by staying tuned.
Here’s the basic formula:
[Accepted Fact] + [Shocking Counter-Premise] = The Logic Gap
Look at the difference in a typical tech review hook:
- Standard Hook: "Today I’m testing the new M3 MacBook Air to see if 8GB of RAM is enough in 2024." (Boring. Viewers assume the answer is 'no' and click away.)
- Logic Gap Hook: "Apple’s $1,100 MacBook Air only comes with 8GB of RAM. Yet, it consistently renders 4K video faster than 16GB Windows laptops. There’s a hardware loophole Apple isn't telling you about."
See what happened? You stated a known flaw (8GB RAM is low), introduced a contradictory reality (it beats 16GB), and forced the viewer to ask: How is that physically possible?
Here is another one for software or coding channels:
- Logic Gap Hook: "I deleted 90% of my app’s codebase, and user conversion went up 400%. But I didn't write a single line of new code to fix it."
To apply this to your next video:
- Identify a common belief your tech audience holds.
- Introduce an outcome that violently clashes with that belief.
- Delay the resolution until you’ve set up the rest of the video.
Stop opening videos with predictable setups. Challenge your viewer's internal logic, force them to solve the puzzle, and watch your average duration skyrocket.
