I have imported a lot of n8n templates. Most of them look great on the canvas and explode the moment real data touches them. Here is my checklist for telling the difference, whether you are buying templates or publishing your own.
The 6 ways templates die
1. Dead branches. An IF node with the false output wired to nothing. The first lead without an email takes the unwired path and the execution errors. Every IF and Switch output must lead somewhere, even if it is just a "log and ignore" node.
2. Phantom node references. Expressions like {{ $('My Config').item.json.key }} pointing at a node that was renamed or deleted. The template author renamed it last Tuesday and never re-exported.
3. Hardcoded credentials and IDs. A sheet ID from the author's Google account, an API key, a webhook URL. You import it, everything is red, and you get to reverse-engineer what each node wanted.
4. The "works on my machine" import. The author exported from an n8n version with node types your instance does not recognize, or the JSON was hand-edited and has a malformed connections block.
5. Untested branches. The happy path runs. The edge path, the one your business actually depends on at 2am, never ran once.
6. No setup map. No sticky note, no README, no list of what to configure. You are reading 40 nodes trying to figure out which three matter.
My import test (steal it)
I run every template through this before it ships:
- Import into a clean n8n instance with zero credentials configured. It must import with no errors.
- Script-check: every connection source and target is an existing node, every IF/Switch output is wired, every
$('Name')reference resolves, every node is reachable from the trigger. - Walk every branch manually. Trigger the false path on purpose. Trigger the edge case.
- Confirm no credentials, keys, or personal data are bundled. Placeholders must be obvious (
PASTE_SHEET_ID_HERE, not a real ID). - One clean manual run with test data before the template is considered done.
What this means for you
If you buy templates, run this checklist before you pay for setup help. If you publish them, this is the bar that separates a $79 pack people recommend from a $7 download people refund.
This is the exact process I used on a 5-workflow pack I sell: lead capture, Stripe dunning, content repurposing, review drips, and lead reactivation. Every workflow ships with the setup checklist on the canvas.
