Running AI in the Browser: How We Built a Zero-Cost Background Remover with WebAssembly

Removing backgrounds from photos is one of the most common graphic design tasks on the web. Yet, almost every background remover online (like Remove.bg or Photoroom) forces users to pay hefty monthly subscriptions or paywalls high-resolution HD exports behind credits.

The primary reason cloud providers charge high fees is the GPU compute cost of running deep learning segmentation models on server clusters.

At UCDREAMS, we took a fundamentally different engineering path: running the AI model directly inside the user's web browser using WebAssembly (Wasm) and WebGPU.

1. The Client-Side Inference Model

By compiling optimized segmentation neural networks to ONNX runtime and executing them client-side in the browser:

import * as ort from 'onnxruntime-web';

// Run client-side inference utilizing local device GPU
const session = await ort.InferenceSession.create('/models/segmentation_quantized.onnx', {
  executionProviders: ['webgpu', 'wasm']
});

The Benefits of In-Browser AI:

  1. Zero Server Costs: Because your computer's local hardware performs the pixel cutout, we don't have to pay cloud GPU bills. That means we can offer 100% free, unlimited HD downloads forever.
  2. Total Privacy: Your personal images, portraits, and product mockups never leave your machine or upload to an external server.
  3. No Watermarks: Exports are clean, transparent PNG files with full resolution preserved.
