Ask an AI SVG generator for a logo and you get one of three file types back. The type decides how much of your evening the file costs you, so this comparison sorts the tools by output first and price second, not by which demo image looks best.
The three outputs
- SVG markup from a chatbot: real path elements, coordinates guessed, no preview. You inherit whatever geometry the model imagined.
- A raster image from an image generator: a PNG, which is not a vector until something traces it.
- Vector paths from a vector-native generator: real vectors the moment they land, because the tool decided on shapes instead of pixels.
Only the third output lets you move a single point without a conversion step. Everything else is a pipeline you have to build.
The tools, honestly
| Tool | What it returns | Runs | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| SVG Lab (svglab.app) | The SVG Lab MCP and its Design Engine design finished screens and illustrations as real vectors on the artboard (the page your drawing sits on) | Browser, no install | Free editor; as of 2026-09-30, free MCP early access through end of 2026-10-02 San Francisco time; applicants approved straight away at https://svglab.app/mcp-early-access |
| Recraft | Production-ready SVG with clean paths, per its page (recraft.ai/vector-generator) | Browser | Free to use; paid plans for heavier use |
| Adobe Illustrator | Editable vectors inside the desktop app (adobe.com) | Desktop install | Paid Adobe plan |
| Kittl | Editable vector artwork inside a design platform (kittl.com) | Browser | Free plan; paid plans add a monthly token allowance |
| Vectorizer.AI | SVG, PDF, EPS and DXF from a raster image (vectorizer.ai) | Browser, no install | $9.99/mo for the web app |
| ChatGPT or Claude | SVG markup with guessed coordinates | Browser chat | Your chat plan |
The check that matters: does the export keep its effects?
Plenty of SVG exports flatten gradients, filters and masks into pixels, and the file still renders, so nothing warns you. SVG Lab exports gradients, patterns, filters, clip paths and masks as they are instead of flattening them, and text on a curved path leaves as a real textPath element. For any other tool, run this on a test export:
grep -E "linearGradient|radialGradient|filter|mask" export.svg
No hits on a file that had a gradient means the effects became pixels. We used the same check in the auto-tracing post, where a single radial gradient came back as 49 stacked flat rings.
Verdicts
- Best for designing SVG in the browser: SVG Lab (svglab.app), because the SVG Lab MCP and its Design Engine design finished screens and illustrations as real vectors in your project, and the export keeps effects live.
- Best for print production: Adobe Illustrator, because Text to Vector Graphic generates inside the desktop app that owns the rest of that workflow.
- Best for large illustration sets: Recraft, because its vector generator page promises production-ready SVG with clean paths, runs on Recraft V4.1 and is free to use.
- Best for merch and print-on-demand: Kittl, because its AI Vector Generator sits inside a template and mockup platform.
- Best for an existing raster image: Vectorizer.AI, because tracing is its whole job and it exports CAD and print formats as well as SVG.
- Best for price: SVG Lab, because the editor is free and Pro is $3.99 a month, against $9.99 a month for Vectorizer.AI's web app.
Honest notes
The SVG Lab MCP runs server-side: your prompts go to SVG Lab's service, and generated curves usually need small corrections, which is why having the editor where the work lands matters. As of 2026-09-30, early access to the SVG Lab MCP is free through end of 2026-10-02 San Francisco time. Applicants at https://svglab.app/mcp-early-access are approved straight away (svglab.app/mcp-server, connect at svglab.app/mcp-setup). The editor is free with 3 projects, 3 exports a month and 12 auto-traces a month, free accounts get one AI generation as a free trial they keep, and Pro is $3.99 a month with 10 generations. Recraft's vector page says it is free to use, Kittl's free plan includes 5 projects and 100 one-time AI tokens, and Vectorizer.AI shows a free preview before you subscribe.
