Your Gaming PC Is Costing You More Than You Think. Here Are the Real Numbers.

Most developers and gamers track GPU performance. Almost none track what their setup actually costs to run every month. I did the math.

The Numbers by GPU Tier

At the US average of 18.2 cents per kWh and 4 hours of gaming daily:

Budget build (GTX 1650, 75W gaming draw): $4 to $5 per month.

Mid-range build (RTX 3070, 220W gaming draw): $8 to $10 per month.

High-end build (RTX 4080, 320W gaming draw): $12 to $15 per month.

Enthusiast build (RTX 4090, 450W gaming draw): $16 to $20 per month.

Add CPU, RAM, storage, fans, and peripherals and the total system draw is typically 1.5 to 2x the GPU draw alone. A full RTX 4090 system pulling 600 to 750W at 4 hours daily costs $33 to $50 a month, over $500 a year.

Idle and Standby Draw

A gaming PC left on but idle draws 80 to 150W. Left on 24 hours a day, that is $10 to $20 a month before you open a single game. Sleep mode drops it to 1 to 5W. Fully off is effectively zero.

If your PC stays on overnight because downloads are running or because you forget to shut it down, that habit alone can add $5 to $10 a month.

Country by Country

The same RTX 4090 system at 4 hours daily costs very different amounts depending on where you live.

United States at 18.2 cents per kWh: $33 to $50 per month.

United Kingdom at 26.3p per kWh: £24 to £36 per month.

Germany at 38.7 cents per kWh: €55 to €82 per month.

Australia at 34 cents per kWh: $46 to $69 per month.

German and Australian gamers with high-end builds are paying $600 to $800 a year in electricity just for gaming sessions.
