Most image compression tools give you a quality slider. You guess 70%, download the file, check the size, go back, try 65%, repeat. It is slow and it does not solve the actual problem, which is hitting a specific KB limit on a form or an upload page.
I just added a free Image Size Reducer to Utilvance.com that works backwards from your number instead.
How It Works
You type a target like 100KB. The tool tests different quality levels and keeps the highest one that still fits under your limit. If the photo cannot fit at a decent quality, it also shrinks the pixel dimensions slightly and tries again. The result lands just under your target instead of somewhere far below it.
Everything runs inside your browser using the canvas API. Your files are never sent to any server. Turn off your Wi-Fi after loading the page and it still works.
What It Supports
JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, and BMP input. Output in JPG, WebP, or PNG. Up to 50 images at once with ZIP download. Preset targets of 20KB, 50KB, 100KB, 200KB, 500KB, and 1MB. Custom target by typing any number. Optional maximum pixel dimensions. Paste from clipboard with Ctrl+V.
A Note on PNG
PNG is lossless so quality compression does nothing for it. The tool can only reduce PNG by shrinking pixel dimensions. If a PNG will not hit your target, switch the output to JPG or WebP. This is a PNG limitation, not a tool limitation.
Why I Built It
The same reason I built every tool on Utilvance. I kept landing on sites with ads, forced signups, or file upload requirements for something that should take five seconds. The Image Size Reducer joins 68+ other free browser tools at Utilvance.com including the SEO Analyzer, Password Generator, JSON Formatter, and QR Code Generator.
No account. No ads. Everything runs locally. Try the Image Size Reducer at Utilvance.com.
