A taxi booking app looks simple from the user's perspective:
Enter pickup → choose ride → confirm → track driver → complete payment.
But behind that simple flow is a fairly complex technical system.
If you're planning to build a Careem-like ride-hailing application, consider several components before writing the first line of code.
1. You need more than one application
A ride-hailing platform generally needs separate experiences for:
- Passengers — booking, fare estimates, driver tracking, payments and ratings
- Drivers — availability, ride requests, navigation, trip management and earnings
- Admins — users, drivers, rides, pricing, payments and platform management
These applications need to communicate with the same backend in real time.
2. Real-time location is a core requirement
Location isn't just a feature in a taxi app—it's part of the entire experience.
The system needs to handle driver locations, nearby-driver matching, trip tracking, and location updates while keeping the experience responsive.
This makes backend architecture and real-time communication important from the beginning.
3. Maps and payments need to be planned early
A ride-hailing application typically depends on mapping and location services for routes, distances, and navigation.
Payment integration also needs to fit naturally into the booking flow, while the backend needs to keep track of fares, transactions, and ride status.
4. Don't try to build everything at once
One common mistake is trying to launch with every feature associated with a large platform.
For an MVP, the core journey can be much simpler:
Book → Match → Track → Ride → Pay → Rate
Once that workflow is working reliably, additional features can be introduced based on actual user requirements.
5. Dubai adds another layer
If you're building specifically for Dubai, the product strategy also needs to consider local transportation requirements and the operational model before development begins.
That can influence everything from how the platform works to how drivers and rides are managed.
We recently put together a detailed breakdown covering the features, technology considerations, development cost, timeline, and other factors involved in building a Careem-like app in Dubai.
