MCP servers are having a moment. But every week I see the same question in Discord servers and Reddit threads: "Should I build an MCP server or just make a custom GPT?"
I've built both. Here's the honest comparison nobody writes.
What we're comparing
Custom GPTs (OpenAI): Instructions + optional Actions (HTTP calls) + optional file retrieval. Lives in ChatGPT. No code required.
MCP servers (Anthropic): A protocol layer that gives Claude persistent, typed tools. Requires deploying a server. Code required.
Round 1: Setup complexity
Custom GPT: 10 minutes. Write instructions, optionally add an OpenAPI schema for Actions. Done.
MCP server: You need to:
- Write the server (FastMCP makes this 30 minutes)
- Deploy it somewhere (Heroku, Railway, MCPize)
- Configure the Claude client to connect
Winner: Custom GPT — if you just want something working fast.
But here's the catch: that simplicity is also the ceiling.
Round 2: What you can actually do
Custom GPTs:
- Call external APIs (GET/POST)
- Upload files for retrieval
- Use DALL·E for images
- GPT-4o reasoning
That's... mostly it. You can't run code, you can't maintain state between calls, you can't stream data.
MCP servers:
- Execute arbitrary code (Python, shell, whatever)
- Maintain state across tool calls
- Stream real-time data
- Call multiple tools in sequence with Claude reasoning in between
- Return structured typed data
- Run locally (no API call latency)
For FinanceKit MCP, I built 17 tools that do things like:
Claude: "Analyze my portfolio risk"
→ get_portfolio_positions()
→ get_price_history(symbol, period="1y") × N positions
→ calculate_correlation_matrix(returns_data)
→ get_risk_metrics(portfolio)
→ "Your portfolio has 0.73 correlation with SPY and 34% max drawdown risk..."
You literally cannot do this with a custom GPT. The multi-tool reasoning chain is the whole point.
Winner: MCP — by a mile, for anything beyond simple API calls.
Round 3: Distribution
Custom GPTs: Share a link. Anyone with ChatGPT Plus can use it. GPT store has millions of users.
MCP servers: Your users need to configure their Claude client. That's a real barrier. You're targeting developers, not consumers.
Platforms like MCPize are solving this — one-click install for Claude.ai, Cursor, and other MCP clients. But you're still not reaching the "open ChatGPT and go" user.
Winner: Custom GPT — for consumer distribution.
Round 4: Monetization
Custom GPTs: OpenAI pays builders a share of ChatGPT Plus revenue based on usage. Numbers are small unless you're in the top 1%.
MCP servers via MCPize: 85% revenue share on subscriptions. My servers are priced $7–$499/month depending on usage tier. One paying Pro customer ($29/month) = more than most GPT builder monthly checks.
Winner: MCP — if you can acquire users.
Round 5: Debugging and iteration
Custom GPTs: Black box. OpenAI's console shows call logs but good luck understanding why it called an action wrong.
MCP servers: Full control. You see every tool call, every input, every output. Claude's reasoning is visible. You can add logging, errors, structured responses.
For SiteAudit MCP, I iterate constantly — I can see exactly when Claude misuses a tool and fix the description accordingly.
Winner: MCP — developer experience is night and day.

My actual recommendation
Build a custom GPT if: You have a simple use case, you want to test an idea fast, your users are non-technical, or you're targeting the ChatGPT consumer market.
Build an MCP server if: You need real capabilities (code execution, real-time data, state), your users are developers, you want meaningful monetization, or you're building something that needs to actually work reliably.
I started with MCPs because the use cases (financial analysis, site auditing) required real tool chaining. A custom GPT version of FinanceKit would be a toy. The MCP version does actual portfolio risk analysis.
The meta point
Custom GPTs are great for prototyping. MCP servers are great for products.
