I wanted to know how Answer Engines like ChatGPT, Google answers suggest a website and what factors does it matter to rank on them.
So, I went a rabbit hole to read all the resources on it, read many blogs, watched hour long videos, and had long chat with ChatGPT.
After all this, here's what I learnt:
- First ChatGPT or any other answer engines break the user prompt into different sub-prompts for example, if I search for "Best iPhone", it will create 3 or more sub prompts like "Top iPhone 2026", "iPhone reviews", "iPhone 17 reviews", etc.
- Then it gets the answers for those, and then compiles a best answer for that.
- Also it considers answers from Reddit, LinkedIn, YouTube, and many forums rather than just blogs. So, being active on these medias will definitely help.
- Backlinks don't matter to Answer Engines. Answer engines don't care about Backlinks, so if you are new entrant like me, you will have better chance of ranking.
- Add a llms.txt to the site. Ask ChatGPT to generate it for you.
Practical Thing
I just didn't learn and leave it. I implemented this to my test website called Simple Online Ruler. I just bought this domain for this experiment.
After implementing all these, I got these results.
Even I started a AI SEO agency to do this for other companies, you can checkout here RankOrange
