USB-C cables lie. "100W fast charging" cables that only do 20W. "USB 3.0" cables that are USB 2.0 speed.

I tested 10 cables with a USB-C cable tester. Here's what I found.

Best USB-C Cable Tester

Recommended: CHARGERLAB Power-Z KM003C

What it tests:

  • Power delivery wattage
  • Data transfer speed
  • Voltage/amperage
  • Protocol support

Check price on Amazon

The catch: $50. Only worth it if you buy lots of cables.

What I Found (Testing 10 Cables)

"100W" cables tested:

  • 3 actually supported 100W
  • 4 maxed at 60W
  • 3 maxed at 20W (total lies)

"USB 3.0" cables:

  • Half were USB 2.0 speed only

Lesson: Don't trust cable labels.

How to Spot Fake Cables (Without Tester)

Red flags:

  • Too cheap ($3 for "100W" cable)
  • No brand name
  • Thin cable (real 100W cables are thicker)
  • No specs listed

Trusted Cable Brands

Buy from these:

  • Anker
  • Cable Matters
  • Apple
  • Belkin

Avoid:

  • No-name Amazon brands
  • "100W" for $5
  • Cables bundled with cheap products

The Real Decision

Buy cable tester ($50) if:

  • You buy lots of cables
  • Want to verify specs
  • Tech enthusiast

Check price on Amazon

OR just buy trusted brands:

Bottom Line

Best tester: CHARGERLAB Power-Z ($50)

Best strategy: Buy Anker/Cable Matters (skip testing)

Don't trust cheap cables. Fake specs are common.
