How to Rebalance Your Portfolio Like a Pro (Free Google Sheets Template Included)

Are you letting your portfolio drift away from your target allocation?

Every quarter, thousands of dollars in potential returns slip away because investors forget to rebalance. But doing it manually is a nightmare — tracking 20+ positions, calculating tax implications, figuring out which lots to sell.

That's why I built a Portfolio Rebalancing Tracker in Google Sheets. It automates the entire process:

What the tracker does:

  • Shows your current portfolio allocation vs target
  • Flags positions that drifted more than 5%
  • Calculates exactly how many shares to buy/sell
  • Estimates capital gains tax (FIFO, LIFO, or specific ID)
  • Generates a rebalancing calendar

How to use it for free:

  1. Copy the template to your Google Drive
  2. Enter your current holdings (ticker + shares)
  3. Set your target percentages
  4. The sheet calculates everything

The key metrics to watch:

  • Drift percentage: anything over 5% needs attention
  • Tax impact: don't sell winners unnecessarily
  • Trading costs: sometimes it's cheaper to redirect new contributions

Want the full template with all formulas pre-loaded? I made a premium version with:

  • 5 pre-built asset class templates
  • Automatic Google Finance integration
  • Tax-aware lot optimization
  • Portfolio heatmap visualizations
  • Rebalancing calendar with quarterly signals

Or just grab the free version by copying the formula examples above into your own sheet. Either way, your portfolio will thank you.

What's your rebalancing strategy? Do you rebalance quarterly or use threshold bands?
