Flutter + NVIDIA Inference: Coalesce AI Results Before They Hit the UI

Flutter + NVIDIA Inference: Coalesce AI Results Before They Hit the UI

A Jetson-side model may emit detections faster than the Flutter interface needs to redraw them. Coalescing replaceable results reduces widget churn and prevents the UI from becoming a second bottleneck.

Preserve semantic meaning

A detection snapshot often replaces the previous snapshot. Task-completed events and safety alerts do not. Define which message types can be coalesced.

Use sequence numbers and timestamps

Attach trace ID, model version, sequence number, inference duration, and source-frame timestamp. Reject out-of-order results when stream sequencing is guaranteed.

Publish stable view models

Transform raw detections into concise view state. Keep tensors, image buffers, and debug payloads out of UI state.

Limit redraw scope

Use selectors or small state holders so changing detections do not rebuild unrelated navigation and settings panels.

Measure freshness and correctness

Track source-frame age, dropped-result rate, and overlay staleness. A fast UI is not better if it presents old detections as current.

Example implementation

This Dart snippet illustrates one part of the design. Adapt types, transport behavior, timestamp semantics, and platform APIs to your actual system before production use.

class DetectionSnapshot {
  const DetectionSnapshot({
    required this.sequence,
    required this.sourceTimestamp,
    required this.labels,
  });
  final int sequence;
  final DateTime sourceTimestamp;
  final List<String> labels;
}

bool shouldAccept(DetectionSnapshot next, int lastSequence) =>
    next.sequence > lastSequence;
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Performance checklist

  • Measure p95/p99 behavior on target hardware, not only a desktop simulator.
  • Bound queues and buffers; define what may be coalesced or dropped.
  • Keep heavy parsing, image processing, and inference away from the Flutter UI thread.
  • Track source timestamps, sequence numbers, stale-data rate, and dropped updates.
  • Test network degradation, reconnects, sustained operation, and resource pressure.
  • Keep control commands and critical alerts separate from replaceable telemetry.
