ROS 2 QoS Meets Flutter: Delivery Policies for Responsive Dashboards
ROS 2 Quality of Service settings influence whether a Flutter dashboard receives fresh data, delayed data, or no data. Match QoS to the meaning of each topic instead of applying one policy everywhere.
Classify each topic
Camera frames, periodic battery state, map updates, and command acknowledgements have different requirements. Document whether each stream prioritizes freshness, completeness, durability, or reliability.
Avoid replaying stale sensor state
For replaceable telemetry, small history depth can prevent backlog. Best-effort may suit high-rate samples where newer data supersedes old data; reliable delivery may suit events that must arrive.
Put a gateway between ROS 2 and Flutter
A gateway can translate ROS messages, enforce access control, aggregate topics, and expose health metrics. Keep middleware details out of widgets.
Show data quality
Display connection state, last-update age, and stale-data warnings. Old values should not look current merely because they remain on screen.
Validate under impairment
Test packet loss, latency, gateway restarts, and slow clients. Verify recovery without unbounded queues or misleading status.
Example implementation
This Dart snippet illustrates one part of the design. Adapt types, transport behavior, timestamp semantics, and platform APIs to your actual system before production use.
Duration? updateAge(DateTime? receivedAt, DateTime now) {
if (receivedAt == null) return null;
return now.difference(receivedAt);
}
Performance checklist
- Measure p95/p99 behavior on target hardware, not only a desktop simulator.
- Bound queues and buffers; define what may be coalesced or dropped.
- Keep heavy parsing, image processing, and inference away from the Flutter UI thread.
- Track source timestamps, sequence numbers, stale-data rate, and dropped updates.
- Test network degradation, reconnects, sustained operation, and resource pressure.
- Keep control commands and critical alerts separate from replaceable telemetry.
