I've been using a 5-question decision flow for RJ45 selection:

1. Indoor/outdoor/vibration? → Sealed or locking?
2. PoE required? → Up to 90W?
3. 100M / 1G / 10G / SPE?
4. Integrated or discrete magnetics?
5. PCB-mount / panel / field-installable?

Answering these five questions usually gets me to the right connector type in under 5 minutes.
