Sled Storm Browser: four-player PlayStation racing over an invite link

What if you could send a friend a link and race together in the original PlayStation version of Sled Storm? That’s the idea behind Sled Storm Browser, an experimental project for playing the 1999 racer with up to four players in one room.

In a dedicated room, each player gets a full-size view of their own sled and the original single-player HUD. Rider selection, course selection, and the race itself still happen in the original game menus. With v0.7.0, only the host sets up the project; guests open an HTTPS invite and join from a desktop browser.

How the room works

Each browser runs PCSX-ReARMed locally through EmulatorJS and WebAssembly. RetroArch Netplay exchanges controller inputs and emulator state. That means every player renders their own view locally, so a four-player room doesn’t have to divide one screen into four.

A dedicated room keeps the emulation running on the host while guests catch up or reconnect. Once a returning player loads the disc data and synchronizes, they can resume their controller slot. The online launcher starts the hosting services and uses a Cloudflare Tunnel to create an HTTPS address for the invite.

Try it with friends

  1. On the host machine, follow the setup guide to build the emulator. You’ll need your own PlayStation PAL disc dump (SLES-02194): one CUE file and all eleven BIN tracks. The repository does not include the game or BIOS.
  2. Run python3 tools/play-online.py, open http://127.0.0.1:8000/ on the host, and click Start game.
  3. Copy the invite link. Friends click Join game and follow the game data prompt. There’s also a mode where each player supplies matching disc files locally.
  4. In Sled Storm, select Start → Multiplayer quick race. Have everyone register a rider before Player 1 starts the race. On the default keyboard layout, press S to join and confirm.

What I’d like to test next

The verification notes document a four-player Chrome race on one Mac in v0.6.0, including separate cameras, the original HUD, and a mid-race reconnect through Cloudflare. There’s still more to learn from races across separate computers, physical gamepads, and soundtrack playback.

If you try it with friends on different machines, I’d love to hear how joining and reconnecting went. Please include your OS and browser and leave out the invite URL and disc files.

Browse the code and setup instructions on GitHub. The project’s original wrapper and tooling are MIT licensed; upstream components retain their own licenses.
