SoftBank Group has announced a $6.5 billion acquisition of Ampere Computing, a chip designer founded by former Intel executive Renee James. Ampere’s primary investors, Oracle (32.27%) and Carlyle (59.65%), are selling their stakes in the company. Ampere, with a workforce of 1,000 semiconductor professionals, specializes in cloud-native and AI computing.
SoftBank had previously considered investing in Ampere in 2021 when it was valued at $8 billion. This acquisition aligns with SoftBank’s broader AI expansion strategy, which includes collaborations with OpenAI, investments in AI infrastructure like Stargate, and repurposing Sharp's old manufacturing facilities in Japan.
Chairman Masayoshi Son emphasized that Ampere’s expertise in high-performance computing and semiconductors will accelerate the future of artificial super intelligence. The deal also marks SoftBank’s strategic shift in chip design, positioning Ampere to expand its client base and capabilities under a larger organization.
