Designers spend most of their workday in a browser — reviewing designs in Figma, researching references, testing web products, communicating with clients and teams. The browser environment shapes the quality of that work more than most designers realize. Here's a setup built for design work specifically.
The Reference Research Problem
Good design requires good references. Finding them usually means browser sessions that sprawl into dozens of open tabs across Pinterest, Behance, Dribbble, and random inspiration sites. Within an hour, you have 40 tabs, can't find the thing you were looking for, and have spent 20 minutes browsing instead of designing.
Tab Groups (available in Firefox) help here. Create a group for each project or reference category: "Project A references," "Typography inspiration," "Current work." Collapse the groups you're not using. The visual noise drops significantly.
Pocket (built into Firefox) works well for saving references without opening them immediately. When you find something worth keeping, Cmd+Shift+S saves it with a tag. You can batch your reference collection and your reference review as separate activities, rather than constantly mixing them.
Color and Display Accuracy
Designers care about color accuracy. Firefox supports wide color gamut (Display P3) on supported displays, the same as Safari and Chrome. For color-critical work, use the system's built-in color management and calibrate your display rather than relying on browser behavior.
One practical note: Firefox's color rendering for images in the CSS has historically been consistent across platforms, making it a good browser for checking cross-platform design decisions.
Extension Toolkit for Designers
A focused extension stack for design work:
ColorZilla — Eyedropper tool. Click anywhere on any page to get the color code (hex, RGB, HSL). Essential for design research and competitive analysis.
WhatFont — Hover over any text on any website to identify the font, size, weight, and line height. Instant font identification for research.
Responsive Design Mode — Built into Firefox's Developer Tools (no extension needed). Press F12, then toggle the device icon to see how any website looks at different screen sizes. Better than Chrome's equivalent for some edge cases.
Colorzilla + WhatFont together cover the basic "what did they do there?" questions without leaving the browser.
The New Tab for Focused Work
For design work, the new tab page should minimize distraction during focused sessions. Weather & Clock Dashboard shows weather and time — useful ambient information without news or social media content that could break focus.
The world clock feature is useful for designers working with international clients or remote design teams — knowing the client's local time before sending a revision or scheduling a review is a small but recurring detail.
Prototyping and Client Reviews
For sharing and reviewing prototypes:
- Figma runs fully in Firefox — no separate app needed
- InVision works in Firefox
- Adobe XD and Marvel are also browser-compatible
Firefox's privacy default of blocking third-party trackers means less behavioral data about your usage is collected when you're in client-facing platforms.
Screenshot and Annotation
Firefox Screenshots (built-in, accessed via right-click → "Take Screenshot" or the camera icon in the address bar) captures visible content or the full page. For quick captures during research, it's faster than OS screenshots because it handles scrolling pages and captures exactly the browser viewport.
Typography Testing
Firefox's Developer Tools (F12) are excellent for quick typography experiments. In the Inspector:
- Click any text element to see its applied fonts and computed CSS
- Use the browser console to test
document.body.style.fontFamily = "..."for quick font comparisons - The "Fonts" panel in the Inspector shows all fonts used on a page
Combined with WhatFont extension, this gives you a thorough view of how any website handles type.
The Minimal Designer Firefox Setup
- Tab Groups: Organize by project; collapse inactive projects
- Pocket: Save references separately from active browsing
- ColorZilla: Eyedropper for color picking from any page
- WhatFont: Instant font identification
- Weather & Clock Dashboard: Clean new tab with time zone awareness for client coordination
- Firefox Screenshots: Built-in page capture
- Responsive Design Mode (F12): Built-in screen size testing
This covers the core design research and cross-reference workflow without overloading the browser with extensions.
