Firefox Keyboard Shortcuts Worth Actually Memorizing

Most people use maybe 10% of Firefox's keyboard shortcuts. The rest are sitting there, unused, quietly waiting to save you time. Here's a focused set that actually changes how you browse — not an exhaustive list, just the ones worth memorizing.

Tab Navigation

Ctrl+T — New tab (you know this one)
Ctrl+W — Close current tab
Ctrl+Shift+T — Reopen closed tab. This one is underused. Accidentally closed a tab? Hit this. It works for the last several closed tabs, in order.
Ctrl+Tab — Next tab (cycle forward)
Ctrl+Shift+Tab — Previous tab (cycle backward)
Ctrl+1 through Ctrl+8 — Jump to tab by position. Ctrl+1 goes to your first tab, Ctrl+2 to the second, etc.
Ctrl+9 — Jump to your last tab (not ninth — last, whatever number it is)

If you work with many tabs open, the number shortcuts are worth memorizing. Combined with pinned tabs for your most-used sites, you can jump to any pinned tab with one keystroke.

Page Navigation

F5 or Ctrl+R — Reload
Ctrl+Shift+R — Hard reload (bypasses cache). Useful when a page looks stale or you're developing.
Space — Scroll down one screen
Shift+Space — Scroll up one screen
Ctrl+F — Find in page
Ctrl+G / Ctrl+Shift+G — Next/previous match in find
/ — Alternative find shortcut (quick find, disappears after a few seconds)

Address Bar and Search

Ctrl+L — Focus address bar. This is probably the highest-value shortcut if you don't already use it. No reaching for the mouse.
Ctrl+K — Also focuses address bar in search mode
Alt+Enter — Open address bar result in a new tab instead of current tab

Developer and Inspection

F12 — Toggle Developer Tools
Ctrl+U — View page source
Ctrl+Shift+I — Also opens developer tools

Bookmarks and History

Ctrl+D — Bookmark current page
Ctrl+H — History sidebar
Ctrl+B — Bookmarks sidebar
Ctrl+Shift+B — Toggle bookmark toolbar visibility

Reading and Display

F9 — Toggle Reader View (on eligible articles)
Ctrl+Plus / Ctrl+Minus — Zoom in/out
Ctrl+0 — Reset zoom to 100%
F11 — Full screen mode

The Highest-ROI Shortcuts

If I had to pick five to learn first:

  1. Ctrl+L — Address bar without the mouse
  2. Ctrl+Shift+T — Reopen closed tab
  3. Ctrl+Tab / Ctrl+Shift+Tab — Tab cycling
  4. F9 — Reader View
  5. Ctrl+1-9 — Jump to specific tab

These five alone significantly reduce the time spent reaching for the mouse during normal browsing. Everything else is incremental from there.

Combining Shortcuts with Extensions

Extensions add their own shortcuts. For example, if you use Weather & Clock Dashboard for your new tab, your new tab shortcut (Ctrl+T) now opens to your weather and world clock display instead of a blank page — turning a simple new-tab action into a quick ambient information check without any additional steps.

You can view and customize all extension shortcuts at about:addons → ⚙️ gear icon → Manage Extension Shortcuts.

Making Them Stick

The best way to learn shortcuts is to deliberately replace one mouse action at a time. For one day, use only Ctrl+L instead of clicking the address bar. The next day, add Ctrl+Shift+T. After a week of deliberate practice, the shortcuts are automatic.

Don't try to learn all of them at once. Pick two or three that address your most frequent friction points and start there.
