Momentum is the benchmark for new tab extensions. It's beautiful: a daily photo, a quote, a time, a focus field. It's been a standard recommendation for years.
Then it went freemium. Weather moved to Momentum Plus ($3.33/month). That's $40/year for weather on your new tab.
This isn't a complaint about Momentum charging — it's a reasonable product decision. But it creates a question: for users who primarily want weather + clocks on their new tab, are there free alternatives that actually work?
What I Was Looking For
My requirements were simple:
- Current weather + at least a 2-day forecast
- World clocks for multiple cities
- Doesn't require an account
- Free, without hidden upgrades
Momentum free tier covers: time, focus, background photo. Weather is not in the free tier.
Alternatives I Looked At
Tabliss — Highly customizable, good design, free. Weather widget exists but it's basic (temperature only, no forecast). World clock support is minimal. Points to dark-sky API which now requires a subscription for the data.
Tab Override — Custom background, links management. No weather.
Start.me — Full dashboard, requires account. More of a bookmark manager with some widgets. Overkill for just weather + clocks.
Weather & Clock Dashboard — Free, Firefox-specific. Full 3-day forecast, multiple world clocks, search bar. No account required. MIT open source.
How Weather & Clock Dashboard Compares to Momentum Plus
| Feature | Momentum Plus | Weather & Clock Dashboard |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $3.33/month | Free |
| Weather | Current + hourly | Current + 3-day forecast |
| World clocks | No | Yes, multiple cities |
| Daily photos | Yes (beautiful) | No |
| Daily quotes | Yes | No |
| Focus / todo | Yes | No |
| Account required | Yes | No |
| Browser | Chrome, Firefox | Firefox only |
The design comparison is real: Momentum has better aesthetics. The photography is high quality, the layout is polished, the quote system adds a human touch.
Weather & Clock Dashboard is functional, not beautiful. It doesn't try to be an inspiration platform.
Who Should Choose What
Choose Momentum Plus if:
- You value the daily photo and quote as part of your routine
- You want a focus / intention-setting workflow in your new tab
- Chrome compatibility matters
- $40/year is a reasonable cost for daily use
Choose Weather & Clock Dashboard (free) if:
- You primarily want weather and time zone information
- You use Firefox
- You'd rather have no paywall for basic features
- You prefer minimal, information-focused design
The Practical Difference
For remote workers specifically, the world clocks tilt the comparison toward Weather & Clock Dashboard. Momentum doesn't include world clock support at any tier. If you're regularly coordinating across time zones, that's a feature Momentum doesn't offer even when paid.
For users who primarily want a beautiful new tab with optional weather, Momentum remains the design standard.
The honest version: they're different products for different priorities. Weather & Clock Dashboard is available at addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/weather-clock-dashboard/ if you want to compare them directly.
