The first two articles prepared delivery and the purchase page. Measurement needs three separate checks: what transaction occurred in Shopify, what a browser or server sent, and what rules the advertising report used to attribute an outcome. When the totals differ, identify what each counts before deciding which system needs repair.
This article follows a hypothetical order, DEMO-021: an ad click on October 13 at 09:50, a purchase and $89 payment on October 14 at 10:20, and a $20 partial refund on October 18. Assume no tax or shipping, and use Asia/Shanghai throughout. This is a teaching record; event receipt and advertising attribution still require separate verification.
Establish the transaction first
Check order facts, event receipt and attribution separately. DEMO-021 is a hypothetical teaching record. Related documentation: https://developers.openai.com/ads/reporting.
In Orders → the relevant order, inspect line items, payment status, and the timeline. Record its identifier, creation time, payment facts, amount and currency, and subsequent cancellation or refund. Order creation, payment, and refund describe distinct facts; agree which one the team's report measures. Shopify order management
In the demonstration, DEMO-021 is paid on October 14. The subsequent $20 refund reduces its net product revenue to $69. If it were still awaiting payment, retain that state rather than include $89 in the team's paid-sales measure. This transaction record can remain independent of advertising attribution, keeping revenue tied to a traceable source.
Verify event delivery separately
An order can exist without a browser event reaching the receiver. Check triggering and event receipt. Related documentation: https://shopify.dev/docs/api/web-pixels-api/standard-events/checkout_completed.
In Settings → Customer events, inspect the existing pixel and test results. Shopify receiving an event, a callback executing, and an external service receiving it are separate checkpoints. Retain the event name, time, business identifier, and receipt result; a connected status alone does not establish all three. Shopify pixel testing
Shopify's checkout_completed fires once per checkout, normally on the Thank you page. With post-purchase or upsell flows, it fires on the first upsell offer page instead. If the required page fails to load, the event does not occur. A missing browser event therefore does not establish that no transaction exists. Shopify checkout_completed
OpenAI's standard order_created represents a completed purchase, while lead_created represents a lead or contact request. Map actual business actions deliberately instead of equating similarly named resources. Server-side CAPI delivery needs the relevant account permissions and an agreed purchase definition. OpenAI supported events
Where browser and server paths send the same purchase, align the pixel, event name, and stable event ID required for deduplication. Retries must retain that ID. OpenAI keeps the first matching event, so settle amount and currency before sending. In a custom integration design, both paths for DEMO-021 could share a stable purchase identifier such as DEMO-021-purchase, with their actual event IDs recorded. This is a design illustration: check the official app's existing ID rules before adding any sender. Shopify webhook-delivery idempotency remains a separate backend concern. OpenAI Conversions API
Consent decisions also need consistent implementation across both paths. A transaction webhook does not itself grant permission to send advertising measurement data. Keep credentials server-side, use the minimum business fields for reconciliation, and exclude raw contact details from ordinary logs. Shopify Pixel Privacy
Put reporting definitions above the totals
If eligible for attribution, an October 13 click and October 14 purchase can be reported on different days. The demo uses Asia/Shanghai. Related documentation: https://developers.openai.com/ads/reporting.
As checked on October 13, 2026, OpenAI's current Reporting documentation specifies default 30-day click and one-day view windows and ad-interaction time for GET Insights and the dedicated conversion report. Its conversions includes eligible click- and view-through goal conversions. A zero-day view window excludes view attribution; conversion_time groups by the conversion date. Those choices affect conversion results rather than the same period's impressions, clicks, or spend. OpenAI Reporting
Return to DEMO-021: the click is on October 13 and payment on October 14. If the purchase qualifies for attribution, ad-interaction-time reporting can place it on the 13th; conversion-time reporting places it on the 14th. Its $69 refund-adjusted product revenue remains in the transaction ledger. Do not assume the platform automatically applies that refund to advertising sales. Check transaction date, attribution eligibility, and revenue definition separately.
A field named Conversions also needs its reporting surface identified. Some pixel/CAPI descriptions of Ads Manager fields differ from the current Reporting API. Record the interface or endpoint, field, windows, time basis, timezone, and selected goal, then apply that surface's current definition. OpenAI Measurement Pixel
Shopify's current marketing-performance entry point is Growth, with related reports also available through Analytics. Choose the date range and attribution model before comparing channels. Reports combine UTM information and integrated app data, and updates can take up to 24 hours. Total orders, channel attribution credit, and advertising goal conversions should not be added together as separate sales. Shopify marketing performance
Reconcile one order in a defined sequence
Layer: Transaction
Record to retain: Order identifier, payment state, amount, currency and refund
First explanation to check: Unpaid/cancelled orders or differing revenue definitions
Layer: Delivery
Record to retain: Business identifier, event time and pixel/CAPI receipt
First explanation to check: Failed page load, consent, sending failure or queue delay
Layer: Deduplication
Record to retain: Stable event ID shared by the relevant paths
First explanation to check: Changed retry IDs or inconsistent event meaning
Layer: Attribution
Record to retain: Report source, goal, windows, time basis and timezone
First explanation to check: Different range/model or pending report update
Payload validation, test-event delivery, and actual campaign attribution are distinct acceptance results. A test order without an eligible advertising interaction can establish the purchase path and event delivery without being attributed to a campaign.
WESWOO can deliver traceable integration work: inventory existing pixels, define event mapping and server responsibilities, test sending and retries, implement deduplication and error records, and reconcile online orders against the selected reports. The team should be able to explain why a particular order appears, does not appear, or appears later in advertising results.
Documentation checked on October 13, 2026. Examples explain reconciliation rather than represent real transactions or campaign performance.
