When building a new software product, teams often try to optimize everything from day one.
But in practice, different stages require different priorities.
For an MVP, speed of validation may matter most.
For a growing SaaS product, architecture and maintainability become more important.
For an enterprise platform, scalability, security, observability, and integrations may become critical.
From a development perspective, I think the challenge is avoiding two extremes:
Overengineering: building infrastructure for millions of users before the product has real users.
Underengineering: building the MVP so quickly that every future feature requires rewriting the system.
A practical approach is to design for the next realistic stage of growth rather than the theoretical maximum.
A few things I would still consider early:
- Database structure
- Authentication and authorization
- API design
- Logging and monitoring
- Automated testing
- CI/CD
- Security
- Third-party integrations
- Deployment architecture I work with a software development team, and we often see projects where technical debt was created because early architectural decisions were never revisited. For developers and technical founders here: Which architectural decisions do you believe are worth getting right even at the MVP stage?
