The iPad Pro has had desktop-class performance for years.
With Apple's M-series chips, performance is rarely the biggest problem anymore. Writing, browsing, photo editing, video editing, file management, and multitasking are all well within its capabilities.
Yet many people still use the iPad Pro mainly as a tablet.
The reason is fairly simple: powerful hardware doesn't automatically create a desktop workflow.
An iPad gives you only one USB-C or Thunderbolt connection. The moment you want to connect a monitor, an SSD, a keyboard, Ethernet, and power at the same time, that single port becomes a limitation.
This is where a USB-C dock starts to make sense.
A dock won't turn iPadOS into macOS, but it can remove many of the hardware limitations that make an iPad feel like a tablet.
Stage Manager Is More Important Than the Dock
The dock itself only gives you more connections.
Stage Manager is what makes the external-display experience much more interesting.
On supported iPads, an external monitor can work as a separate workspace instead of simply showing a copy of the iPad screen.
There's a big difference between the two.
With mirroring, the monitor basically shows what is already on the iPad.
With an extended display, you can keep different apps and windows on each screen.
For example, you could have a browser and document editor on the external monitor while keeping email, messages, music, or reference material on the iPad.
Add a keyboard and mouse or trackpad, and the setup starts to feel much closer to a desktop computer.
It is still iPadOS, of course, and that matters. But for many everyday workflows, the difference is becoming less important.
There is one thing to check before buying any accessories:
Not every iPad supports the same external-display features.
Some newer iPads support a proper extended desktop, while older models may have more limited external-display behavior.
If your main reason for buying a dock is to use a monitor, check the capabilities of your exact iPad model first.
Two HDMI Ports Don't Necessarily Mean Two External Displays
This is probably one of the easiest mistakes to make when looking at USB-C docks.
You see two HDMI ports and assume:
Two HDMI ports = two independent external monitors.
That isn't always true.
The number of physical video ports is only part of the story.
Display support also depends on the host device, operating system, video protocol, graphics architecture, and the controller used inside the dock.
A dock that can run multiple monitors from a Windows laptop may behave differently when connected to an iPad.
So instead of asking:
How many HDMI ports does this dock have?
Ask:
How many independent displays can my specific iPad actually drive through this setup?
That's a much more useful question.
For a Desk Setup, Display Output Comes First
If you only connect your iPad to a TV occasionally, a simple USB-C-to-HDMI adapter is probably enough.
For a permanent desk setup, however, display output becomes much more important.
Ideally, I'd look for something capable of 4K at 60Hz.
4K at 30Hz technically works, but the difference is noticeable when scrolling web pages, moving windows, using a mouse, or working with documents for several hours.
Resolution gets most of the attention, but refresh rate matters a lot for everyday desktop use.
Don't Forget Power Delivery
Once an iPad is connected to a monitor, storage devices, Ethernet, and other peripherals, power becomes another problem.
You don't want to disconnect everything every few hours just to charge the iPad.
That's why USB-C Power Delivery is one of the most useful features in a desktop dock.
With the right setup, the same USB-C connection can handle:
- Display output
- USB data
- External storage
- Peripherals
- Networking
- Charging
There is also an important detail about power ratings.
If a dock says it supports 100W Power Delivery, that doesn't necessarily mean the iPad receives 100W.
The rating usually refers to the maximum power the dock can accept or pass through. The dock itself consumes some power, while the iPad negotiates the amount it actually needs.
For an iPad setup, reliable charging is generally more important than chasing the highest wattage number.
USB Speed Matters More Than the Number of USB Ports
Docking stations are often sold as:
- 8-in-1
- 10-in-1
- 12-in-1
- 15-in-1
Those numbers are easy to market, but they don't tell you much about actual performance.
Three slow USB ports may be less useful than one fast USB port.
If you're connecting a keyboard and mouse, USB speed hardly matters.
If you're using an external SSD or transferring large photo and video files, it matters a lot.
A 5Gbps connection can be perfectly fine for general storage, while a 10Gbps connection can significantly reduce transfer times for larger files.
Before counting ports, think about what you're going to connect to them.
A USB port for a mouse and a USB port for a high-speed NVMe SSD may look similar, but their performance requirements are completely different.
The iPad Makes a Surprisingly Good Photo and Video Workstation
Photography and video are two situations where an iPad-based desk setup makes a lot of sense.
Imagine returning from a shoot and connecting everything through one dock.
You insert the SD card, import the footage, connect an external SSD, and use a larger monitor for reviewing or editing.
The workflow can be surprisingly clean.
For this type of setup, I'd care more about:
- A reliable SD card reader
- Fast USB data
- Stable external storage
- 4K display output
- Power Delivery
than having six or seven miscellaneous USB ports.
Again, the right ports matter more than the total number of ports.
Is Ethernet Still Useful?
For casual browsing, Wi-Fi is usually more than enough.
At a fixed desk, wired Ethernet can still be useful.
It can provide a more consistent connection for things like:
- Video calls
- Cloud backups
- Large uploads
- NAS access
- Remote desktop sessions
- Long working sessions
This isn't necessarily about getting a higher benchmark result.
Consistency is often the real advantage.
If your iPad spends most of its time on a desk, an Ethernet port is worth considering.
If you mainly travel with it, a smaller dock without Ethernet might make more sense.
A Good iPad Desk Setup Can Be Very Simple
You don't need a huge collection of accessories.
A practical setup can be built around just a few things:
- iPad
- External monitor
- USB-C dock
- Keyboard
- Mouse or trackpad
The iPad connects to the dock.
The dock connects to the monitor and power.
Storage, Ethernet, memory cards, and other peripherals can then be connected when needed.
On supported devices, you can use the external monitor as an extended workspace and arrange apps across both displays.
I think the setup works best when the two screens have different jobs.
For example:
External monitor: primary workspace
iPad display: secondary information and controls
You could write on the monitor while keeping research open on the iPad.
You could edit video on the external display while using the iPad for files or communication.
You could keep a browser on the monitor and email on the iPad.
Trying to make the iPad behave exactly like a traditional dual-monitor PC isn't always necessary.
The built-in touchscreen is one of its advantages, so it makes sense to use it differently.
When Is a Simple HDMI Adapter Enough?
Not everyone needs a full docking station.
If your only requirement is getting video from an iPad to a monitor or TV, a basic USB-C-to-HDMI adapter may be all you need.
A dock becomes much more useful when several requirements appear at the same time:
- External display
- Charging
- SSD storage
- Keyboard and mouse
- Ethernet
- SD card access
At that point, one dock is usually cleaner than carrying several separate adapters.
And that's really the point of a docking station.
It isn't about maximizing the number of ports.
It's about turning a single USB-C connection into a practical desktop connection point.
So, Can an iPad Pro Replace a Computer?
There isn't one answer for everyone.
If your work depends on full desktop applications, complex development environments, specialized peripherals, several external monitors, or software that only exists on Windows or macOS, an iPad may still be the wrong tool.
But consider another type of workflow:
Writing.
Browsing.
Email.
Video calls.
Photo editing.
Light video editing.
File management.
Remote access.
For these tasks, a modern iPad with the right accessories can already cover a surprisingly large amount of traditional desktop work.
So the question isn't really:
Is the iPad powerful enough?
A better question is:
Does my workflow fit iPadOS?
A dock solves the connectivity problem.
A monitor gives you more workspace.
A keyboard and mouse improve input.
But software still decides whether an iPad can replace a traditional computer for you.
Before buying a dock, I'd answer four questions first:
- Does my iPad support the external-display setup I want?
- What resolution and refresh rate does my monitor need?
- Will I use fast external storage?
- Do I need to charge the iPad while everything is connected?
Once you know those answers, choosing the right dock becomes much easier.
In the end, a good iPad desktop setup shouldn't feel complicated.
Plug in one cable.
The monitor comes on.
Your storage appears.
Your peripherals work.
And the iPad keeps charging.
That's usually all you really need.
