My notes from Aaron Patterson's RailsConf 2020 keynote

Aaron's talk was very Aaron: 20 minutes of jokes, 40 minutes of brain bending Rails performance show-and-tell. His goal: to teach you how to profile your Rails app. If you haven't watched his keynote yet, here's the gist:

A few takeaways:

  • Not all code is equal
  • Similar behaviors should have similar performance
  • Poor performance is a bug

Miss Aaron's talk? In THIS economy?

Aaron's talks are like a The Simpsons chapter. The initial point of the first minutes of the chapter has nothing to do with the chapter's main topic.

Those first 20 minutes in Aaron's talk were really funny but as soon as he got into the where clause thing, it got really serious and deep.

I liked the keynote because he went so deep in the framework that, indirectly, help us lose the fear of the hidden parts in Rails.

The takeaways really are on point

  • Not all code is equal
  • Similar behaviors should have similar performance
  • Poor performance is a bug
