The 8 Guitar Chords Every Beginner Should Learn First

Learning guitar? You don't need to memorize hundreds of chords to start playing real songs. Here are the 8 chords that unlock the most music.

The Essential 8

Open Chords (Major)

  1. G Major — The first chord most people learn. Used in thousands of songs.
  2. C Major — Pairs perfectly with G. Together they cover most folk and pop.
  3. D Major — Completes the G-C-D trio that powers most country and rock.
  4. A Major — Opens up a whole new key.
  5. E Major — The foundation of blues and rock.

Open Chords (Minor)

  1. Am — The sad version of A. Used constantly in pop.
  2. Em — Easiest chord on guitar. Two fingers, done.
  3. Dm — Completes the Am-Dm-Em minor progression.

Songs You Can Play Right Now

With just G, C, D, and Em, you can play:

  • Wonderwall — Oasis (Em, G, D, A)
  • Let It Be — Beatles (G, D, Em, C)
  • Horse With No Name — America (Em, D)
  • Knockin on Heavens Door — Bob Dylan (G, D, Am)

I usually look up the exact chord progressions on ChordRoom — they have a beginner-friendly section with easy songs sorted by difficulty.

Practice Tips

  1. Learn chord transitions, not individual chords. Practice switching G to C, C to D, etc.
  2. Use a metronome. Start at 60 BPM, switch chords on each beat.
  3. Do not skip strumming patterns. Down-down-up-up-down-up is the universal pattern.
  4. Play actual songs from day 1. Even if it is sloppy, playing music keeps you motivated.

The Next Step

Once you are comfortable with these 8, add:

  • F Major (barre chord — the hardest beginner milestone)
  • B7 (essential for blues)
  • Cadd9 and Dsus4 (easy embellishments that sound pro)

The key is consistency. 15 minutes daily beats 2 hours once a week. Pick a song you love, look up the chords, and play along.
