$4.5M Imagi Bet Pulls Vibe Coding Into K-12 Schools

Imagi vibe coding is now a funded classroom bet: the edtech startup raised $4.5 million to help K-12 students build software with AI assistance instead of learning code only through syntax drills. The seed round includes Brighteye Ventures, Day One Capital, and artist Will.i.am, according to TechCrunch.

Founded in 2018 by Dora Palfi and Beatrice Ionascu, Imagi gives students and teachers tools for coding, basic computer skills, curriculum building, and, since last year, AI literacy. The new money will go toward expanding into more K-12 schools, district sales, hiring, product features, and a new platform planned for next month.

“Rather than worrying about students cheating or regressing with AI, the education system has to adjust to the reality,” Palfi told TechCrunch. “Most kids already use AI, but we need to teach children to build with AI rather than just passively consume it.”

The thesis behind Imagi vibe coding is blunt: schools can either treat generative AI as a cheating risk, or teach students how to build with it under supervision. Imagi is choosing the second path.

The company’s most important product move came last November, when it announced a partnership with Lovable, a vibe-coding tool. The integration lets teachers create lessons and give students controlled access to the platform, so they can learn how to build with AI while guardrails stay in place.

OpenAI also provided $1 million in credits so schools can access the Imagi x Lovable tool for free. Palfi told TechCrunch, “We continue providing free trials and freemium access thanks to their support.”

Vibe coding, in this context, means students describe what they want to build, use AI to generate or refine the code, then learn by testing, debugging, and improving the result. The center of gravity moves from memorizing syntax to making clear requests, judging outputs, and fixing what the machine gets wrong.

Palfi told TechCrunch that OpenAI and Lovable are “experts in building frontier AI tools,” while education experts like herself “have the experience and knowledge to safely deploy them in the classroom.” In Imagi’s setup, every prompt and every response generated by the platform is screened, with violations removed before they reach the student.

The company also says it complies with COPPA, FERPA, and the EU’s GDPR. TechCrunch reports that this means zero data retention, and that Imagi’s partners are not training on student data and activity.

That matters because the school version of AI coding has a narrower margin for error than the adult developer version. A student can learn a lot from a model’s answer, but also absorb bad habits, wrong code, weak reasoning, or unsafe content if the system is poorly designed.

Imagi is also training teachers to use AI, coding, and computational tools so they can teach them with more confidence, Palfi said. That may be the company’s hardest operational challenge. A classroom AI tool doesn’t win because the demo looks good. It wins if teachers can use it without losing control of the lesson.

The early examples are concrete. Palfi said one teacher built an app that translated her curriculum into 15 languages spoken in her classroom. Another student built a website for his lawn-mowing business, with a calendar link so customers could book time directly.

A seed round with big-school adoption questions still unanswered

Imagi now has the capital to chase more schools, but the next proof point is adoption, not funding. Since launch, the company has worked with more than 700,000 students across 140 countries, Palfi told TechCrunch. The seed round gives it more room to sell into districts and build new product features, but it doesn’t settle whether AI-assisted coding improves learning outcomes at scale.

The company’s bet is logical. Not every student has access to AI tools at home, so school may be the most practical place to teach safe and active use. If students are already using AI, the classroom question becomes less about prohibition and more about instruction.

The counterpoint is just as clear. Schools will need evidence that students are learning computational thinking, not merely producing polished outputs. Teachers will need curriculum fit, privacy assurances, classroom controls, and enough training to spot shallow work.

This is where Imagi’s positioning gets interesting.
