Indian electric scooter startup River secured $120 million in fresh capital on Wednesday, marking one of the largest single fundraises in the country's competitive two wheeler EV sector and fueling an aggressive expansion of its manufacturing footprint according to TechCrunch.
The Series C round was led by domestic investors Elev8 Venture Partners and Claypond Capital, with participation from Singularity AMC, Anicut Capital, 360 ONE Asset, JIF Capital, and HDFC AMC. Existing backers Yamaha Motor, Al-Futtaim Group, and Mitsui also joined. Founder and CEO Aravind Mani told TechCrunch the round comprised over 88% primary equity, with less than 12% as venture debt, bringing River's total funding to $144 million.
XOOMAR Analysis: The investor list signals a pivot. Early rounds backed product vision. This round, dominated by Indian asset managers and industrial partners, is a bet on manufacturing execution. It's capital for the factory floor, not the R&D lab.
From 20 to 300 Scooters a Day
River's fundraising follows a year of dramatic operational scaling. The company, founded in 2021, built its initial traction around a single model: the Indie, a utility focused electric moped priced at ₹155,000 ($1,630).
"There was a point in time when we were making 20 vehicles a day. Today we make 300 vehicles a day, and that scale up has not been easy. This is the steepest learning curve for any company out there," CEO Aravind Mani said.
That production ramp, to about 6,000 vehicles a month, drove a 330% surge in revenue for the fiscal year ending March 2026. Monthly revenue now hits roughly ₹1 billion ($11 million). River sells through more than 75 stores and has delivered over 50,000 units total.
A New Factory and a Multi Model Future
The new capital has a clear physical destination: a second factory. River's first plant on the outskirts of Bengaluru is nearing its upgraded capacity of 10,000 vehicles per month and will be full by early next year.
Construction on a new facility will begin within two months, Mani said. The first phase is slated for mid 2027 commissioning, with a planned annual capacity of 700,000 to 800,000 vehicles.
XOOMAR Inference: This isn't just more space, it's a different scale of operation. The new plant's capacity is nearly seven times the current facility's output, indicating River's ambition shifts from a niche player to a mass market contender.
Parallel to this build out is a product expansion. After years of a single model strategy, River will introduce two new models starting in 2027. "The restriction is the capacity. I don't have capacity to do one more model today in my current factory," Mani noted, directly linking manufacturing scale to product line growth.
The retail network is also set to explode, targeting over 200 stores by March 2027 and roughly 400 outlets by March 2028.
The Path to Operational Profitability
With scale comes a clear financial target. Mani stated River expects to become operationally profitable once monthly production reaches 20,000 to 25,000 vehicles, a goal set for the 2028 29 timeframe.
Gross margins are currently "approaching double digits" and should improve with higher volume, he added. This public profitability target, tied to a specific production volume, functions as a clear milestone for the next stage of investors and the market.
XOOMAR Analysis: This round is a referendum on River's asset heavy, manufacturing first model. While companies in other sectors chase software like efficiency, as seen in our coverage of a $37M weather AI funding round, River's success is welded to its ability to build physical things cheaply and reliably. The next 24 months will test that bet.
The company's focus on scaling manufacturing as the core challenge echoes a sector wide reality. Success in India's price sensitive EV market now depends less on subsidy tailwinds and more on production discipline and unit economics.
The Watch Items: All eyes are on the ground breaking for the new factory in the coming quarter. Any delays will bottleneck the entire 2027 model launch plan. Second, watch gross margin progression. Moving from "approaching double digits" to solid mid teens will be critical to hitting that 2028 29 profitability target. Finally, Yamaha's continued backing is a strategic signal. It suggests a legacy giant sees River's platform as a viable pathway into India's electric two wheeler dominance, a market where brute manufacturing scale wins.

Why This Changes Everything
- The $120M funding round marks a major shift in India's competitive two-wheeler EV sector, signaling investor confidence in River's transition from R&D to large-scale manufacturing execution.
- River's 330% revenue surge to monthly sales of roughly ₹1 billion ($11M) proves significant consumer demand for its utility-focused, locally-made electric scooters.
- Scaling production to 300 vehicles/day and planning multi-model expansion challenges established players, accelerating India's electric mobility transition and local EV ecosystem growth.
