I'm a Software Engineer and a teacher.
There's no feeling quite like the one you get when you watch someone's eyes light up learning something they didn't know.
If you ask me, school projects should be enough 🙂
Unfortunately, there are still employers who believe that in order to be a good programmer you need to display "passion" by having a string of side projects, not realizing how such requirements favor those privileged enough to have the time/resources to maintain said projects and lock out those of us with families/school/a life.
The good news (sort of) is that such companies tend to have really toxic work environments and expect their employees to put in extra hours and stay late, so by not qualifying for their arbitrary standards you self-select out of the worst places to work.
