Spam calls have a special talent for arriving exactly at dinner time. Blocking a number on Android takes about fifteen seconds.

Here's how to block anyone, how to silence suspected spam automatically, and how to undo it if you change your mind.

The fast version

Block from the recent calls list. Open the Phone app, find the number in Recents, long press it (or tap it, then the three dot menu), and choose Block number. That's it: calls and texts from that number stop reaching you.
Block a number not in your recents. Phone app, three dot menu, Settings, Blocked numbers, Add a number. Type it in, confirm, finished.

Turn on automatic spam filtering. If you use Google's Phone app (most Androids do): Settings, Caller ID and spam, and enable both See caller and spam ID and Filter spam calls. Suspected spam gets flagged red or silenced before it ever rings.
- Samsung phones: Phone app, Settings, then the spam protection option from Hiya works the same way
- Filtering sends them to voicemail instead of ringing
Block texts from the Messages app too. Open the conversation, tap the three dot menu, Details, Block and report spam. Reporting helps Google's filter learn for everyone.
Review or undo blocks. Phone app, Settings, Blocked numbers shows your whole list. Tap the X next to any entry to unblock instantly.

Blocking doesn't notify the other person. To them your line just rings or stays silent, so it stays discreet.
Emergency or work contacts saved wrong get blocked by accident more often than you'd think: check the list once in a while.

Unidentified callers keep rotating numbers? Silence unknown callers (in Settings on many phones) sends every number not in your contacts to voicemail.
Carriers offer free spam layers too (Verizon Call Filter, AT&T ActiveArmor, T Mobile Scam Shield). Stack one with Google's filter.

Can a blocked number leave a voicemail?
Depending on the phone, yes, in a hidden blocked folder you can ignore entirely.
