How to Free Up Storage on Android Without Deleting Your Photos

That 'storage almost full' warning always shows up at the worst moment. The good news: your photos are rarely the real problem.

Updated August 08, 2026, after a fresh review, with updated visuals and links.

Most of the space on an Android phone is quietly eaten by app caches, old downloads and forgotten files. Here's how to reclaim gigabytes while keeping every single photo.

Before you start

  • An Android phone
  • 5 free minutes
  • Nothing else, no apps to install first

How to do it

1. See what's actually using the space

Open Settings and tap Storage. You'll get a breakdown by category: apps, photos, videos, system. On Samsung it's under Battery and device care, then Storage.

  • If 'Apps' is the biggest block, the next steps will fix most of it
  • If 'Photos' is huge, jump to the tips section

2. Clear app caches

Go to Settings, then Apps. Open a heavy app like TikTok, Instagram or Chrome, tap Storage, and tap Clear cache. This deletes temporary junk, not your logins or data, and can free hundreds of megabytes per app.

3. Empty the Downloads folder

Open the Files app and check Downloads. Old PDFs, APKs and memes live forever here. Delete what you don't need.

4. Remove apps you haven't opened in months

In Settings, then Apps, sort by size. Games are the usual suspects: 2 GB for something you played twice. Android even suggests unused apps under Play Store, your profile, Manage apps and device.

  • You can always reinstall later and keep your account
  • Paid apps stay in your library forever

5. Let Google Photos back up, then clean

Open Google Photos, make sure Backup is on, then tap your profile, Free up space. It deletes local copies of photos that are already safe in the cloud. This is the step that protects your gallery while freeing real space.

Tips that actually help

  • Set WhatsApp to stop auto-downloading every meme: Settings, Storage and data, then turn off auto download for mobile data and WiFi.
  • Check the Trash folder inside Files and Google Photos. Deleted files sit there for weeks, still using space.
  • Repeat step 2 once a month. Caches grow back faster than you'd think.

Do this once a month and the full storage warning becomes a stranger. The whole routine takes less time than choosing what to delete in a panic.
