The fast version

Open web.whatsapp.com. In any browser on the computer. A big QR code greets you: that's the key to everything.
Scan it from the phone. WhatsApp, Settings (or the three dot menu), Linked devices, Link a device, then point the camera at the QR. Your chats populate in seconds.

The thorough version

Or install the desktop app. From whatsapp.com/download. Same QR ritual, but it lives in your taskbar/dock, starts with the computer, and handles notifications better than a browser tab.
Understand the multi device magic. Since the multi device update, linked computers work even when the phone is offline or out of battery. The phone only revalidates the link every couple of weeks in the background.
Log out sessions you don't recognize. Settings, Linked devices lists every connected computer with last active time. Tap any you don't own and log it out. Worth checking after using a shared or work computer.
