Asset groups in AI Max for Shopping are the primary structural unit for organizing creative and product signals. They work similarly to Performance Max asset groups but with some behavioral differences that matter for migration planning.
What Asset Groups Do in AI Max for Shopping
Each asset group in AI Max for Shopping contains:
- Text assets (headlines, descriptions, long headlines, business name)
- Image assets (landscape, square, logo, portrait)
- Video assets (optional but recommended for YouTube placements)
- A product listing group (defines which products from your feed belong to this asset group)
The AI uses the combination of creative assets and product signals to generate ads across surfaces: Shopping, Search, Display, Gmail, YouTube, Maps.
The key difference from standard Shopping campaigns: AI Max for Shopping doesn't give you direct control over which product appears in which ad. The AI selects products from the listing group and combines them with text/image assets dynamically.
Performance Max vs AI Max Asset Group Structure
Performance Max asset groups (https://yositeup.com/blog/google-ai-max-shopping-replacing-performance-max-2026) and AI Max for Shopping asset groups have the same basic architecture. The migration from Performance Max to AI Max does not require restructuring your asset groups if your existing structure is sound.
What changes:
- Reporting: AI Max for Shopping provides slightly more granular reporting on asset performance than Performance Max did
- Product listing group control: AI Max gives more control options for defining which products belong to which asset group
- Creative automation: AI Max has more automated creative generation capability — it can create headline and description variations beyond what you provide
What stays the same:
- The asset hierarchy (campaign > asset group > assets + listing group)
- The recommended number of headlines (5+), descriptions (5+), images (landscape + square)
- The function of "audience signals" (signals about which users to target, not hard constraints)
Product Listing Group Strategy
The product listing group within each asset group defines the product scope. Multiple asset groups within one campaign can target different product subsets:
By margin: high-margin products in one asset group (tailored creative emphasizing quality/value), lower-margin products in another (price-focused creative)
By category: different product categories that warrant different creative approaches
By seasonal relevance: for Q4 planning, a "Q4 hero products" asset group with dedicated creative for your top seasonal items
Asset group segmentation allows the AI to show product-relevant creative — rather than generic brand creative — for specific product categories. This is more efficient for accounts where product lines are significantly different.
The Data Deletion Context
The June 2026 data deletion (https://yositeup.com/blog/google-ads-reporting-data-deleted-june-2026) removed historical conversion data at the campaign level, which also affects asset group performance history. If your Performance Max campaigns had well-established asset performance signals before the deletion, those signals are partially preserved in the surviving data (pre-April 2025).
For new AI Max for Shopping campaigns migrated from Performance Max: the asset groups inherit no historical performance data of their own. Providing strong text assets (not just minimal required fields) helps the AI calibrate its creative selection during the learning phase.
Recommended asset group setup for migration:
- 5-7 distinct headlines (not variations of the same message)
- 5 unique descriptions
- All image formats (landscape 1.91:1, square 1:1, logo, portrait 4:5)
- At least one YouTube video if any video content exists
The February 2027 Deadline
DSA retirement in February 2027 (https://yositeup.com/blog/google-ads-dsa-ai-max-migration-february-2027) is separate from the Performance Max to AI Max for Shopping migration. DSA and AI Max for Shopping serve different search intent types:
- AI Max for Shopping: product search queries, commerce intent
- AI Max for Search (DSA migration path): informational and navigational queries, broad service queries
For accounts running both DSA and Performance Max for Shopping, the February 2027 deadline represents the DSA migration. Performance Max to AI Max for Shopping has a separate migration timeline.
Asset Performance Reporting
In AI Max for Shopping, asset performance reports show how individual text and image assets are performing. The quality labels (Best, Good, Low) indicate relative performance within the asset group.
Under the July 2026 ToS (https://yositeup.com/blog/google-ads-tos-july-2026-ai-automation-what-changed), the AI has authority to use assets in combinations you didn't explicitly plan. The "Low" performance label doesn't mean the asset is never served — it means the AI is using it less frequently because other combinations perform better.
Assets rated "Low" for more than 30 days should be replaced with new creative variants. The 30-day window aligns with the 30-day dispute window established in the July ToS — a useful coincidence for review cadence planning.
