Google Ads account structure is the foundation of campaign performance.
The right structure for multiple products keeps budgets controlled and data clean.
The Hierarchy
Account
└── Campaign A (Product Line 1)
├── Ad Group A1 (Specific Product)
│ └── Keywords: [exact] + "phrase"
│ └── Ads: Headlines specific to this product
└── Ad Group A2 (Product Variation)
└── Campaign B (Product Line 2)
└── Campaign C (Brand Keywords — separate always)
One Campaign Per Product Line: Why
Budget control: If Product A has 60% margin and Product B has 20% margin,
they need independent budgets. A shared campaign mixes these.
Bidding strategy independence: Product A may need Target ROAS.
Product B may be in a data-building phase needing Maximize Conversions.
Same campaign = one strategy for both. Wrong for both.
Performance diagnosis: When performance drops, which product caused it?
Mixed campaigns make attribution impossible.
Structural Mistakes to Avoid
Too many keywords per ad group (50+):
Impossible to write ads relevant to all of them.
Ad relevance drops → Quality Score drops → CPC rises.
Brand + non-brand in the same campaign:
Brand terms have 5-10x higher CVR. Smart Bidding overweights them.
Generic keywords get fewer impressions. Keep brand in its own campaign.
Over-segmenting (1 keyword per ad group):
Smart Bidding needs 30+ conversions per campaign per month to work.
Spreading data across 50 campaigns starves the algorithm.
