Google Ads Performance Max: What You Actually Need to Know 2026

Performance Max campaigns run across all Google surfaces from one campaign. Here is what to actually expect — and when to use them vs. standard campaigns.

What PMax Does Well

  • Automated placement across Search, Shopping, Display, YouTube, Gmail, Maps
  • Uses creative assets + conversion data to find buyers across surfaces
  • Works best when: Strong conversion tracking + sufficient creative assets

What PMax Cannot Do

  • No search term visibility (minimal transparency)
  • No individual keyword control
  • Poor performance without conversion history to learn from

Asset Groups: The Key Structural Unit

Each Asset Group targets a specific audience or product category with its own creative set.

Provide maximum variety per Asset Group:

  • 5 headlines
  • 5 descriptions
  • 5 images (landscape + square required)
  • 5 logos
  • Video (if available)

More creative variety gives PMax more combinations to test across placements.

The Recommended Approach

  1. Run Standard Search first — prove keyword performance, build conversion history
  2. Add PMax — for incremental reach beyond what Standard captures
  3. Monitor: Check which Asset Groups are labeled "Learning" vs. active

The common mistake is launching PMax before having conversion data. It will spend budget without direction.
