How to Read Google Search Console When AI Overviews Change the Rules

Standard Google Search Console reporting was designed before AI Overviews became a major part of Google Search. In 2026, reading GSC without accounting for AI Overview behavior produces incorrect conclusions.

What Changed

GSC Performance merges two types of visibility into the same dataset:

  1. Organic ranking positions (traditional)
  2. AI Overview citation positions (new, all recorded as position 1)

Most GSC reports do not separate these. The result is inflated average position metrics for sites with AI-cited content.

The Practical Problem

Teams reviewing GSC data see improving average positions. They report positive SEO performance. Traffic and revenue are flat. Both readings are technically correct — the problem is the interpretation.

Building a Correct Reporting Framework

AI Exposure Report: Filter queries with 200+ impressions and CTR under 1%. Track impressions only — this is your AI visibility, not clickable traffic.

Organic Performance Report: Filter queries with CTR above 2%. These are your genuine ranking pages. Track clicks, position, and CTR trends here.

Commercial Query Report: Filter by your product/service keyword clusters. These queries are less AI-dominated and CTR remains meaningful.

Why GSC data is misleading in 2026 and how to restructure reporting
