Internal links are the structure that tells Google which pages are most important.
Most sites under-use them. A deliberate cluster strategy amplifies all rankings.
Why Internal Links Matter for SEO
PageRank flows through internal links. A page with many internal links pointing to it receives more authority from your domain.
Google also uses internal link anchor text as a relevance signal for the linked page.
If you have strong pages not linking to important content: Authority is not flowing where it should.
The Topic Cluster Model
Pillar page: One comprehensive page on a broad topic. Target: high-volume, competitive keyword.
Cluster pages: Narrower pages on subtopics. Target: lower-volume, specific keywords.
Linking rule:
- All cluster pages link to the pillar page (anchor: the pillar's primary keyword)
- The pillar page links to all cluster pages (anchor: each cluster's primary keyword)
- Cluster pages can link to each other when topically relevant
Internal Linking Execution
Audit: Crawl your site (Screaming Frog). Find pages with zero internal links (orphan pages).
Orphan pages get no PageRank flow. They are invisible to Google in terms of authority.
Anchor text: Use descriptive anchor text, not generic "click here" or "read more."
"Google Ads Quality Score guide" passes relevance. "Read more" does not.
From strong pages: The most link equity you can pass comes from your highest-authority pages.
Identify your top pages by organic traffic and add links from them to pages you want to rank higher.
How Many Internal Links Per Page
No strict limit. But: Every link dilutes the PageRank passed from that page.
Practical rule: 3-8 contextual internal links per article. More for long-form pillar content.
