YouTube Ads in AI Max — How Video Gets Integrated Into AI Max for Shopping and Search

AI Max campaigns can serve ads on YouTube without a separate YouTube campaign. This integrated approach is different from how YouTube advertising worked before AI Max, and understanding what it means in practice helps advertisers prepare.

How YouTube Fits Into AI Max

AI Max for Shopping:
When you provide video assets in an AI Max for Shopping asset group, the AI can show those assets as YouTube Shopping ads. These appear on YouTube search results and as ads alongside YouTube content. The AI selects when to use video vs image vs text based on the placement and predicted conversion probability.

Video assets in AI Max for Shopping are optional but recommended. Without video, the campaign still runs — it just cannot serve on YouTube inventory that requires video format.

AI Max for Search:
AI Max for Search can serve on YouTube in a more limited capacity — primarily through "Search campaigns on YouTube" (SCYT), where Search-style ads appear for YouTube searches. These don't require video assets.

The AI decides which inventory (Search, Display, YouTube) to use for each impression based on predicted conversion value. You cannot force allocation to specific placements in AI Max.

What Video Assets to Provide

For AI Max for Shopping, Google's recommended video asset specifications:

  • Landscape 16:9 format (1280x720 minimum)
  • 15-60 seconds (15s and 30s perform best for Shopping contexts)
  • Product-forward content: product shown prominently in the first 5 seconds
  • Audio: audible speech within first 5 seconds is recommended
  • Brand/logo visible in first 5 seconds

For accounts without professional video production: Google's Video Creation tool (available in Google Ads > Tools > Video Creation) can generate shopping-style videos from your Merchant Center product images and feed data. These AI-generated videos are lower production quality but acceptable for inventory coverage.

The Data Deletion and Video Performance History

The June 2026 data deletion (https://yositeup.com/blog/google-ads-reporting-data-deleted-june-2026) removed performance history from Q4 2025. For accounts that ran video in Performance Max or earlier YouTube Shopping campaigns during Q4 2025, that performance data is gone.

The AI Max for Shopping video performance models for Q4 2026 will be based on Q4 2024 video data (if available) and 2026 year-to-date video performance. This is the same data situation as for other AI Max signals — less Q4-specific historical data than usual.

Practical implication: if video performed significantly differently in Q4 2025 vs Q4 2024 (higher brand awareness, different audience behavior), the AI may not have that Q4 2025 context. The AI will learn Q4 2026 patterns in real time.

The DSA Migration and Video

DSA campaigns (retiring February 2027: https://yositeup.com/blog/google-ads-dsa-ai-max-migration-february-2027) did not use video assets. When migrating DSA to AI Max for Search, video is not required.

However, for accounts that previously separated YouTube campaigns from DSA campaigns: after migration, AI Max for Search may expand reach to some YouTube inventory that you previously handled with dedicated YouTube campaigns. Monitor for overlap and budget implications.

Performance Max to AI Max for Shopping Video Comparison

Performance Max campaigns (which AI Max for Shopping is replacing: https://yositeup.com/blog/google-ai-max-shopping-replacing-performance-max-2026) also supported YouTube inventory. The video asset requirements are the same between Performance Max and AI Max for Shopping.

If your Performance Max campaigns already had well-performing video assets: these assets can be reused in AI Max for Shopping asset groups. The AI's quality assessment of existing video assets carries over to the extent that performance data survives (pre-April 2025 data).

Budget Allocation for YouTube in AI Max

AI Max automatically allocates budget between surfaces (Search, Shopping, Display, YouTube). You cannot force a percentage to YouTube.

If you want to ensure YouTube is receiving budget: maintain strong video assets in your asset groups. The AI allocates to YouTube when it predicts YouTube impressions will convert — without video assets, that prediction cannot be made.

If you want to limit YouTube spend: use placement exclusions to exclude specific YouTube channels or content categories that you don't want your ads associated with. You cannot exclude YouTube entirely from AI Max for Shopping while keeping Display, but you can narrow which YouTube placements the AI can use.

July 2026 ToS and Cross-Surface Authority

The July 2026 ToS (https://yositeup.com/blog/google-ads-tos-july-2026-ai-automation-what-changed) confirmed AI authority over cross-surface optimization. This includes the authority to allocate budget between Search, Shopping, Display, and YouTube without requiring per-surface approval.

The practical benefit: the AI can shift budget toward YouTube if Q4 conversion data shows YouTube is driving higher incremental value than Search for certain product categories. This optimization happens automatically. If you see unexpected YouTube spend increases in AI Max for Shopping in Q4, check the conversion value attributed to YouTube in your asset performance report — the AI may have correctly identified a high-value YouTube audience.
